15-minute 45 mph commute on '05 650?

I don't know where to start.

I currently ride a street-legal '04 Yamaha R1 set up for both the Supersport and Superbike classes. I hold an expert road racing license, and have instructed a little.

I relocated last year to a tropical island with weather that allows riding 365 days a year, but there is no race track (I do have keys to the local go-kart track though). We have some spectacularly twisty but low-speed public roads here, and the police pretty much leave us alone.

I commute 15-minutes each day at 20-45 mph. Mostly about 45 mph. And when I can, I like to take the bike out and remind myself why I don't own a car.

I'm considering pulling the trigger on a new left-over '05 FS650e.

I have no problem with changing oil and filter on schedule, as well as running the valves when they're due, throwing in a new spark bolt, etc.

But the prospects of performing regular engine overhauls on a European exotic, 2500 miles from the nearest dealer, in a place that is basically a third-world country, causes me to pause for consideration.

I am not a stranger to the extreme when it comes to motor vehicles. My first bike was a Hayabusa- I earned my expert road-racing license on it after my first weekend on track. My first four-wheel-drive was a mud truck with 44" Swampers, 20" of lift, 5.13 gears, Detroit lockers in both ends, and absolutely no chrome. I built the engine and transmission for my 600 horsepower GMC Typhoon with my own hands. And I drove all three back and forth to work every day for years. From time to time, things happened, but the trade-offs were calculated, and for me it was worth it.

I think there's a question in there somewhere...

I can't justify owning a bike that does 104 mph in first gear alone, when I rarely go over 45 mph.

The riding position on a sport bike is not a problem when the wind blast at 80-90 mph supports your torso enough to take the weight off your wrists. But most of my riding is at half that speed.

180 mph+ is not something that can be experienced regularly without unreasonable risks, given the environment.

My main concern would not be the bike, it is the police! The fun (trouble) you will have on that bike knows no bounds. However, you have stated the law will leave you alone.

Buy it and ride it to work. It is far from a long distance sport tourer, but a short commute should not be a big problem. Sounds like you have plenty of mechanical ability. Keep the valves adjusted and the oil clean, and go ride.

When I used to commute I would see a guy pass me once in a while, who had a motarded and street-legalized KTM. He had a pair of MX boots, knee pads over the jeans, MX helmet and a body armor. He sure was a sight and made my day each time.

People were giving him looks with a "what the...?" expression on their faces but in fact he was surely one of the only guys on a motorcycle that day who really knew how to ride a bike and also was wearing proper protection.

BUT people who ride or commute a lot with their motard or street legal dirt bikes get pulled over a lot by cops who have no clue these bikes are street legal (when they should go after the loud hogs, for instance).

You'll be fine Kirk, it's just pulling the flies out of your teeth when you get to work because you've been smiling so much, that'll be the problem. How much are the dentist bills where you live, or do you have insurance?

As far as your commute, Kirk: Look at it as a 15 minute work-out before and after work! Have fun!
Take a look at UHE member Karl´s overhaul at 200hrs HERE and you will see that they last really well on tarmac if cared for properly. And his is a 2001 650, the most trouble-prone year of all. The ´05 is FAR better!

Off topic, but inspired by LeFrog´s post:

I live in a part of my country where the sheriff is rarely seen, except in the summer when it´s nice and comfy outdoors...
My FE is semi-street legal (special enduro tag, several waivers).
Friends of mine ride totally illegal to and from the trail (and around the village), and the discussion goes whether you really want to show a licence plate to tell everybody who you are...
Some people just get pissed seing a dirt bike on the road period, and if they can identify you, the more fun.
AND in our country, you can find out where the owner of a vehicle lives by ways of googleing the license plate. Easy pickings for thieves.

I have reached a compromise, where I will miniaturize my plate and mount it less visible, claiming it just sticks out too much and gets torn off by trees and bushes...

I think I can get away with it at my age. :D
