98 fe400. bike would not restart on sunday during a club ride after i was bragging how easy it was to start. suspected something electric. resistance readings on the stator were pretty close to spec, but trigger voltage is only about 6v (ac or dc) on a swift kick. pulled the flywheel to see the stator and was presented with a 4" long rub mark on the top where it had dragged on the flywheel. measured a bunch of distances including the standoffs on the case. the measurements indicated everything was straight. dialed end of crank.. perfect. seems the distance from the mount plate of the stator to the point where it is rubbing is about .070 higher than similar points arond the stator (even after being rubbed off). anybody ever seen anything like this? its almost like it wasnt straight in the jig when they made it. makes a new stator look imminent. :( this ones only a year old. there's a bunch of views in my gallery.

hi dale, it was tight. no play. i found it odd that it only hit on the top, so i measured all the things that could be off. using a straight edge and dial caliper, i measured from the cover edge down to the standoffs on the case. all the same. then i mounted the stator and measured from the cover edge to the same points on the stator. its protruding out at the top only. even at the most worn point it was .070 higher. if you look at some of the pics in my gallery, you can see it has worn into something metal at about 11 and 1 oclock. i looked at it w/ a magnifying lens. it didn't appear to be broken, and the part of the flywheel it engages is the inner lip. i'm not sure if that edge is conductive or not. is a puzzlement. i should have been suspicious when it came in a KTM  box! maybe it just doesn't like living in that squalid chamber.

I have noticed uneven surfaces on the backs of stators that could cause that. It looks like it would be best to remove any high spots in the potting before mounting.

I replaced the flywheel and the stator on my FE501-02 half a year ago. I noticed the same thing on the stator (but not to the same extent as on yours). I also measured evrything and it seemed that the potting was a litte bit "to thick". The important thing is the clearance between the metal parts.

Ned,
I had a similar problem but different on an old Yamaha RT1 360. ;) My ignition coil came loose, and rubbed against my flywheel. It appeared to be ok, except that it had some rub marks on it, but there was no spark. I changed that coil and viola, it worked. From what I understand, if there is some shorting between the wires in the coil, it will not generate enough juice to make spark. Granted that was a 30 year old engine, with points, but perhaps the same principles apply.

sirsumm,
an rt1 was my first owned dirtbike. what a pig :( , but what a tractor  the flywheel used to spin about once a ride to the point where i kept spare tools and index keys in my pocket. ahh, what memories!
the berg doesn't appear to be shorted anywhere, tho.

just finished double checking everything. still only around 5-6v from red to black on a hard kick. i looked at the rear of the stator and theres no way its hitting anything. waiting for a call from the dealer. may be a long wait.

Ned, the RT1's were a blast....did you ever start yours backwards? I also carried spare keys, and a ratchet for the flywheel. Must have been a characteristic of that engine. You might check out www.bikeboneyard.com Brenden has a 501 that he is parting out. The parts you need might be something he has for a reasonable price. I have been buying allot of my parts from there recently.

Re: funky stator? deteriorating to yamatalk

that rt1 is the reason i married my wife. ran into her on a dirtbike trip. she was the only other person who could start it. heres a pic of the rt in a 250mx frame. ended up giving it to her and switching to a husky 450 desert master (30 some years ago)

Thats great! I put mine into a YZ125 frame. I even fought for the thing back in my divorce. It sure was a hideous beast, but at the same time the most reliable dirt bike I ever owned, once I figured out the whole flywheel thing on it. As a matter of fact I just got rid of it when I got my Husa, I traded it to a bike junkyard. *sniff* sometimes I still miss the ol girl.

Common occurence regarding early systems which have had the flywheel over tightened.

coulda happened  its just that it never touched the previous stators at the same torque. i guess we'll see what happens to the next one whic should show up today.
thx for the info, dale.

ha ha ha, i guess the joke's on me  , the new stator came this afternoon. and guess what? it looks exactly like the other one. has a nice gouge around the outside down to the metal, just exactly like the old one. it wasn't me, it was the factory!
