While I have the engine out I am going for the all black look.
I am going to paint the frame tonight or tomorrow black or silver. Still can't decide.
I am goign for new black plastics all around and am having difficulties in getting in a tank(can't afford one)
There are rather rare to find privately
So I wanna have a go at painting it. I have doen the usual research online on TT etc and read reports about others trying and failing but there has been some success.
Here is an interesting article on it http://www.4strokes.com/tech/plastic_re ... efault.asp

totally degrease it, rough it up then prime and paint it.
I would just like to see what you guys think?

The guy mentions in that article about tanks being treated inside with sealant to stop the bubbling. Anyone know about this stuff?

Its probably this product although I question whether it will have adequate adhesion to plastic.

The painting advice seems sound. The only issues would be the fuel permeation and shiny black paint may not give you the durability (scuff resistance) you are looking for. Automotive paint is expensive. Plan on spending $150+. I would just purchase a black plastic tank.

I painted all the plastic on my bike except the tank so I don`t know how it would work out for the tank. On other plastics try Krylon Fusion spray paint. I have had good luck with it and it has held up very good.
Good luck

McMucker,
I personally think you're asking for big troubles by painting your tank. Even if the sealer does stick to the plastic on the inside, I think the fuel fumes will still try to breathe through and eventually create a mess. I suppose it may help if the drain the fuel from the tank after each and every ride. That would be fun! :D

i think a new tank is the safest option [not cheap].if you were to seal the inside , how long would it last in the long term . as you know it does not take much to clog a jet. another option would be a tank cover ,some tank covers on road bikes look cool.and it would be cheaper than a new tank.

Mr. McM, Go for the new tank! Paintining will be a giant pain in the "gas cap".
