On my 470 that I just bought in Oct. I was going to replace the timing chain because it was rubbing on water outlet on the inside. So I pulled off the engine side cover and seen that there was no oil connection nipple in the end of the crank! It looks the previous owner or joe mechanic removed it. It was nowhere in the motor. I have put about 100 miles on the bike and (1) 2 hour race with no problems. I have heard a very slight rod knock sound but only if I was cruising down a fire road in 6th gear. I have changed the oil after every ride and have not found anything in the oil strainer. I was thinking of pulling the motor apart and do an inspection. What do you guys think? How much does it cost to rebuild a crank?

No debris in the filter. I would say replace the nipple and chain. Dont forget the updated timing chain tensioner as well. Just my opinion...if it aint broke dont fix it.

Replace nipple (I got to say nipple on a motorcycle website :-k ), then reassemble your bike back together, then ride it until it breaks.... Your looking to spend 100's of $$$ if you go pulling your crank out and you might have nothing wrong. Then again, if it does go south on you and you do have to re-ferb the crank you'll still be shelling out 100's of dollars. I would slap that sucker back together and ride it like I stole it before dishing out upwards of a grand if I wasn't even positive the crank was all jacked up   ....

Regards,

given that the chain is off i would go for the latest ('05 plus) camchain, and i would get the updated chain guide as well. i would then remove the 'lump' off the end of the camchain tensioner and you have an updated CCT, chain and all will be well in the garden.

regards

Taffy

I'm with sandskipper and Taffy, fix what you know is wrong and ride it.

Good luck!

Hi,
yes as the other guys already told you: Just reinstall the nipple and ride the bike on.
I can´t imagine that you damaged anything. The only thing you have is no proper pressure in your con rod bearing. That´s the same situation like pre 2001 engine models already had.
I totally agree with Sandskipper and Taffy. You´ll pay lots of dollars to pull out and disassemble the crank - maybe for nothing.
So save the money and your time till you really have a reason to split the cases.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to visit the BOSS tomorrow to get the the new chain, shoe and (nipple. )My only concern was if I was 30 miles from the trail head I would not like to see my connecting rod poking out of the case.

I got my new oil nipple and could not believe how small the hole is in it. It could not be any bigger than .020 of and inch. I think I could have had more oil going to the connecting rod without it. Has anybody increased the size of the hole for more oil flow?

I was going to install my new cam chain today and noticed that I don't have any dots on the crank gear or counterbalance gear to line up. The previous owner put some scratches on the two gears, but how do I know they are correct? Is there an easier way to check than to remove the large nuts that hold the gears on and look at keyway position and count back the number of teeth as per the pic that taffy posted?

My guess would be no. You'll probably have to remove those nuts and count from the keyways. Have you done this already? Just curious.

Have you already removed the clutch?? If not, and everything is still in place, be sure the motor is at top dead center on compression, and you should be able to verify if the scratches are correct.
