Anyone out there run Mikuni carb on their FE 501? I bought bike 2 months ago and done some adjusting and have it to where is runs decent. No air box just has a short k&n filter off the back of carb. Bike is not smooth it seems the power just comes on hard. Wondering what jetting I should do in carb. Numbers on the carb are 13886A? I'll attach a photo.IMG_20240323_182638689.jpgIMG_20240330_174911334.jpgIMG_20240322_011922633.jpg

The Mikuni carburetor with the identification number 13886A is a Mikuni VM38-86 carburetor. The “VM” designation indicates that it is a round-slide type carburetor, and the numbers “38-86” specify the size of the carburetor in millimeters, with a 38mm bore diameter.

Installing this carburetor on a Husaberg is not a common modification, as the stock Dellorto performs adequately. Consequently, finding someone with experience and baseline jetting specifications may be challenging.

If it starts well, doesn't backfire on deceleration, or stumble upon rapid throttle opening, it is likely jetted reasonably well. The needle affects throttle response from 1/4 to 3/4, so experimenting with different needles could be beneficial. Sudco offers a wide range of Mikuni parts on their website: Sudco Intl. Corp. - Carburetors. A quick-pull throttle might have been installed, or this carburetor's slide could open faster than the stock carb, making the power delivery feel like an all-or-nothing response.

Ok thank you for the carb info. It starts good idles ok and no backfire on deceleration, very quick throttle response and pull hard the whole range no pickups. It does smell like it's burning rich. And no need to use choke to start it. I have noticed fuel coming from overflow tube when it's slightly leaned over. Guessing float is set to high?

set the float height correctly.

You can pacify an engine with a richer pilot jet which makes the engine lazy.

as you don't need choke I think it is though; rich enough!

you won't listen to this but I'll talk to my hand OK? Hope you don't mind!!!
get a leaner PJ and the bottom end will become more responsive and sharper, so when you touch the throttle by 1mm it will gain 50 revs. what's happening currently is that you have to open the throttle 2mm to get a reaction and then it launches.....

the above statement was a waste of time but I can't do a job without doing it properly and to the end...know what I mean?

By the way, there's a regular contributor on here named Ned37 and he has a Mikuni on his old 90s 501. ask him in a PM for some help.

Why do you say I won't listen and your statement is a waste of time?

I do know what you mean. This bike is new to me so I'm finding everything that last owners have done. As for me if I can't do the job correctly I won't do it at all, that being said I end up doing the job correctly.
