I recently picked up a neglected 2000 600 FE that of course needs engine work. A fellow had it listed on here back around spring/summertime of this year.

I am in the process of disassembling the engine, and so far, things look promising. Crank rolls smoothly, and no play in con rod big bearing.

A couple things. This bike seems to be rarer than usual, kind of a split model year? I don’t see much information or parts listed for it. I would like to get a service manual, but don’t see one through the usual routes. I let a 99 manual slip through my fingers on fleabay recently, but still see a couple for ‘98 bikes. Will the information included apply to my engine? The biggest difference I notice is my engine has a hydraulic clutch. Previous model year 600’s have a conventional cable actuated clutch?

Second, anyone have miscellaneous parts they may want to part with? The kickstart stop is worn down and had everything jammed up. I think that’s the only thing that saved this poor bike from being completely wrecked. I see a bunch of fine steel in the oil filter cavity (attracted to a magnet) so luckily didn’t go through the engine. However it may have starved it for oil, as the oil pump gears have severely deep pitting. Is it correct that the cylinder doesn’t have a base gasket? This one just had a thin layer of RTV sealant in between the case and cylinder.

To wrap up, my short list of needed parts are, oil pump, kickstart mechanism steel stop, flywheel, starter, starter intermediate gear, and new piston and gasket set. I will send the piston and cylinder out for replating. The rest of the bike is pretty much complete, although beat up. I’d like to get it in running condition before addressing the cosmetic issues.

Thanks for any and all information you fellows might be able to share.

PS, I also have an ‘01 650E basket case I need a lot of chassis parts for as well. But, that’s a whole different post!

the 2000 is the first year of the new chassis that went through to 2003 including. 2001 was as you know, the first year of the then 'new' engine. so yours is a one year hybrid and be proud of it as it is a fine motorcycle.

1997 had a different ignition
1998 same ignition and so other than the chassis is virtually the same as yours bar that hydraulic clutch.
1999 didn't have any engine changes i can think of.

when rebuilding the engine, always try and upgrade and improve at the same time. luckily, you can't buy the old **** anyway - well mostly!

I've got all the parts you'll need. pistons, little end bushes, gasket sets. all on the web shop but do ask any questions. it is important to upgrade as well as refresh. for instance the kickstart ssledge plate should be renewed from me and it will be already modified.

email me and I'll send you a workshop manual....and parts book as well if you haven't got one.

Cheers!

Greetings Taffy

After 4 years (maybe more) since i gave my Fe600e engine to a mechanic friend of mine for repair, i finally got it back.... in the same box and at the same condition as when i gave it to him
🤣
So, i'll do it myself (i've done it with a FZ400r engine, a Fiati 650 & Uno engine also) But i had help from Haynes manual and it was piece of cake for me. The problem is there's no such thing for my '99 Fe600E.
I have download some manuals online but i was wondering if you have anything better than those. I'll send you my email and when you have some time, could you please send me what you have?

Best regards
Dimitris

Ps. I have read your reply above for improving the engine and have that in mind when i need parts 😉

there is a 1999 workshop manual for doing an engine rebuild. do you have this?

Taffy

No, i don't think i have it. Could you please send it to me?
My email is [email protected]

Thank you

I'll do a full article of the proccess when it's done, but here is a littre teaser

The project so far..... 😁

Your frame and bodywork are from 1999. The hydraulic clutch was introduced in 2000.

2000 frame guards, 2003 front mudguard, black fork guard bayonets should be blue. Still looks great though!

Cheers

I finally started working on my bike, but i believe this needs to be replaced.
Part code: 200 029-01 Part description: Seal support '89
The sealings arent difficult to find (normal realing 10x18x4/4.8) but the support part is damaged.
Any ideas where can i find it?

you haven't looked very hard then have you!

and not just any oil seal, use the metal-backed seals, they press in HARD and won't leak. the rubber seasl slip in and don't seal so well.

The funny thing is, if you can check my IP, you'll see hundreds of visits at your site my me.
But always i go to "90's/00;s Genuine old/new Parts" section
Before i order the part, i think i'll look better all the categories

Thanks Taffy, i'll proceed with it soon

Dimitris

The thing is, just use the OEM part numbers with no spaces 123 456 01 is 12345601. 70% of the parts that fit a 2000 fit a 2002-2008 and so aren't in that section. Years ago my first parts man set all that up and I said "don't do it" and would he listen? would he phuq!

Anyway, I'm stuck with it now.

Cheers!
