Problems removing lower shock bolt

Im going to try again this weekend. I have a 2001 FE501 as far as i know it is standard I onlt picked it up earlier this year. I need to get the rear shock off for a rebuild (leaking oil down the 'shaft')
A while back I poped the caps off the swing arm, Cracked the nut wound it off a few threads then used a socket extension bar backwards as a drift against the nut. It is clear it isnt shifting. tried a few more threads but just to be sure the nut wasnt against the inside of the swing arm. still no movment.

In my mind the shock has worn into the bolt and this is now stepped hence it not wanting to come off/out.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem before I reach for a really big hammer.

Don't panic!! got it out. It wasn't the bolt it was the bush stuck in the swing arm.

SO got the forks and shock off... just need to get them rebuilt!!

How did you take it out?

I was trying once when I was changing swingarm bearings but without sucess so I leave it and take down swingarm together with shock.
 
Ahh well. I had made a bad memory call. It wasn't the bolt that was stuck. That came out quite easy (word of warning keep a long allen key in the bolt head otherwise it drops inside the swing arm and is a bugger to recover)

Bike up in the air (strapped down on stand)
removed the inner mudguards
block of wood just under rear wheel ready for when it drops
removed top bolt
cracked off the lower nut
tapped bolt through with a narrow drift.
This is when I found it was the sides of the bush that were not moving in the swing arm, the shock was moving on the bush fine.
squirt of plus gas on each side
kettle on, cup of tea
there is space through the bottom of the swing arm to drift against the lower shock eye but i didn't fancy that.
Long thin drift through the lower hole again
taking hold of the top of the shock I swung it hard down against the rear tyre, which after a few 'blows' had it coming free,
once against the drift remove the drift
a carefull swing against the tyre and it was out :)

i wish I'd had trouble with the lower shock bolt on my 570....it came out last week up in Lincolnshire. This X-bushing is a real micky-mouse job.

Ahh I get the drilled/greasable bolt not sure i get the bush, it looks like it is offset to you can change the angle? (Dont know if you know about raising suspension on Landrovers but someone did something like it for the front axle to correct the caster angle)

I know more than you can possibly imagine!

came 5/120 on Sunday aged 51. next over 50 was 100 places behind me. does anyone use my services for suspension or handling? no.

Hi,

I'm facing the exact same issue removing the rear shock bolt bushing on my 08 FE. Bolt came out with a fair bit of breaker bar persuasion - but I'm stuck on the bushing.

Trying to figure out your solution for the bushing. Can't quite follow.

The bushing seems super thin - no punch (or socket, etc) that is the exact diameter to be punched out from the left to the right side.

How did you punch out the bushing, if there's so little side-facing surface area?

EDIT - sorted. It looked as if there was a sleeve part of the bushing hanging up across the width of the lower bolt eye. Stood on the swingarm and pulled up on the tail - out it popped.
