Oil cooler for 05 FS650c?

I tried to search the Forum and the site for an answer but no answers. Does anyone know of an oil cooler that will enable me to increase the oil capacity for Dual Sport use of this bike? I might be using it for 10 day 1500 mile dirt rides and I'm concerned about how the oil will hold up. I've been told there is such a thing, but I can't seem to find it? :?: :?:
 
not sure on the specifics of the 650 but researched it thoroughly for the fe570. if there's nothing specifically designed for the 650, you can look at the jag oil coolers and see if you could custom rig it up to sit in front or behind your radiator if there's room. but from memory they only add about 350ml to your capacity, not a lot for the money and time involved.

a guy rigged up his fe570 to run oil through the frame tubes for well over an extra liter but a lot of dicking around involved. not sure if you could do this with the 650 frame though. http://www.expeditionportal.com/veh...want-a-lightweight-adventure-travel-bike.html

i rigged up a wr450f to hold an extra liter just using an oil catch can a few years ago which worked out well, but that was very easy as i could just plumb into the inlet and outlet for the oil stored in the frame.

Joe Rocket did make one but they are out of business. It only added a extra 250ml or so of oil. I have posted about this before and the best solution we could come with was a Dakar style bash plate with an oil tank instead of water and plumb it into the oil line using the Joe Rocket style adapter. Which was a replacement oil filter cap with an inlet outlet and a remote oil filter. It was mentioned that the oil tank should be kept at around the same height as the crankcase oil level to avoid wet sumping. However if the oil tank was higher a one way valve may prevent this. I'm no expert on oil pressure and the internal needs of the 650 and some one who knows more could chime in. My original idea was using the underseat fuel tank, but wasn't sure how heat proof it was. Although I have seen bikes with plastic oil tanks, not all plastics are the same. Otherwise I thought of getting an oil tank made from alloy. If I recall the Joe Rocket oil coolers were mounted in front of the radiator or under the seat, so I would assume they had a one way valve to stop oil running back, so my original idea came from replacing the JR cooler with a larger reservoir. The other question was if the oil pump had the pressure to pump higher than the crankcase.

I was doing 10-12 hour days a Month ago today and still changing oil.

Well good for you, but sometimes it really cuts into beer time. If you have to strike camp, get a fire going, rustle up some grub it can make life a little easier to not have to change your oil as well. If you can set up extra oil capacity, then why not? The other thing is if your out for 7 days then it saves you having to carry 7 litres of oil on the bike when your already packed tight with all the other gear you need.

Yes I've done 10-12 hour days and changed my oil every night, no problem. But then I've done the same ride on a bike that didn't need oil changed, and it was a lot more enjoyable to sit around drinking a beer and watching my mates change their oil.
 
BUT YOU SHOULD BE CHANGING THE OIL COMMENSURATE TO THE CAPACITY. THESE BIKES NEED THE OIL CHANGING AFTER A DAYS RIDE. NOW IF YOU DOUBLE THE OIL CAPACITY IT MAY BE THAT YOU CAN GET THREE DAYS out of it but you are barely touching the oil capacity so you want to leave alone.

you see, touch anything and it is the part that will let you down! keep it simple, change the oil.

the only thing they do to sidecarX machines is an oil cooler and that is where all the crap moil sits and the bits of swarf! then when the bike starts up it is too cold and it doesn't build pressure up.

I raced in Poland at the Breslau and all that went wrong was the road map, the garmin sat/nav and the ICO. even the toggle switch broke in a fall.

I'm trying to get you to think ddifferently. it's not that you're TECHNICALLY wrong.

I'm sorry, but I can barley make any sense out of your post. To clarify, I'm in Australia in the sub tropics, so it is always hot and up to 90% humidity. So no problem with the oil warming up. I understand the weakest link in the chain of mechanical workings is the mechanic and what he touches. I still think that two litres of oil is better than one

Good news here fellas!!!

And so here is awesome news! I happened to find a fellow Husaberg sidecar racer in Denmark if I remember correctly. He makes custom oil filter cover/adapter for installing remotely oil cooler/tank/spin on filter! His name is Wim Derks and I have his permission to share his contact here. His email is [email protected] looks like threads are metric 12mm. I got 3, 53 euro each. They also have fittings and hoses. I'll be working to install large spin on filter under the seat to double my oil capacity. Check valves will be in line and original filter as well. I'll also bump oil pressure.

Hi polska, as a matter of interest how do you intend to increase the oil pressure?
There have been some good threads on here about it.
 
Went to specialized hardware store and got 3 springs matching in size my oil pressure regulator original spring, but each one is progressively stronger. Cut to length and just replace the spring. On my 2005 case it sits just behind a screw/plug. Very easy access. I'll tee in small gauge to monitor pressure.
 
Add Bushmecanic wet ignition!! Have almost 3L oil!!!

I'm also going to do wet ignition as per Bushmecanic. Thank you Bushie! With that I'll be around 3 liters of oil!!! Super good for the longevity of the engine when combined with good large external mount second filter AND increased oil pressure.:D:D:D
