hi, i have an 04 fe450 that slips on the starter when cold, it had a full rebuild 46 hours ago at taffys and had all the starter upgrades fitted, the garter spring on the sprague snapped so i put the original garter spring back on but still no joy, if i tap the start button it will grip and turn the engine slightly here and there but then slip and leave the starter motor just whirring, im wondering maybe theres a touch too much compression? it starts on the button when warm but other than that it wont start when cold due to slipping

ps i checked valve cleanrance and reset them but still no joy

any thoughts??

you still need that stronger spring - maybe!

the sprague makes a whiiiizzzzz-chung noise while the starter clutch just makes the same whiiiizzzzz noise but no chung on the end. you can also sometimes spot which one is the perpertrator by looking through the oil filler hole at the slenderedt of angles!

thinking its possibly the spring then? it just whizzes when pushing the button theres no other noises

then that means it is the starter clutch then.... 2 shims.

typical '04... if i still lived in west virginia, i'd weld that sucker!

I have the exact same problem at the moment starter just whizzing round.. what do you mean by 2 shims?

please.....

you can unbolt and dismantle the starter clutch. the internals can spin unless cruchsed so tight that it is impossible.

when you disassemble the torque limiter, you can put very thin shims in the inside to tighten the "breakaway" tension that keeps your starter from turning over the engine. it is there to provide a safety in case the engine backfires and tries to destroy the starter system.
when yo take it out, clamp the gear part in a padded vise and turn it with a torque wrench to see at which point it breaks away. iirc, it needs to be around 20 ftlbs?. adding a shim or 2 will increase it. it seens to be a problem in most of the '04 models.

the kit has photos and instructions.

remember to always kickstart when you have just put oil in. also when it isn't interested.

Hi

My advice is, even with all the mods done, use it as a re-starter.

I only use the button with the engine hot.

yes it is. The changes we've made take starting a Husaberg to a new level. it just leaves this oil thing.

Hello you can do The shims your self, have done it on my FE650

thanks for all your replys, taffy i checked my invoice from you and it includes the atarter kit so im presuming iv already got the shims fitted? can you get julie to email me a copy of the fitting instructions so i can check there fitted and still working? im going to change the garter spring to your stronger one today and will need to check before re assembling
