Valve Adjustment - Starting Problems

Hey everyone,

I adjusted the valves on my 1994 FC501 today and hooked everything up to try and start it. (I bought this bike in nonrunning condition and haven't had it started) I first put the bike in TDC and verified that the piston was at its highest point with a dial indicator. A mark lined on the flywheel and stator at this point as shown in the picture. There is another mark on the flywheel as well. (I wasn't sure what the purpose of this mark is?) I adjusted the valves to the specification of 0.1 mm as stated in the manual using feeler gauges. After trying to kick my bike over, it backfired a couple times but wouldn't start. Do you guys think I did something wrong with the valve adjustment or it is likely another issue such as the carburetor out of adjustment? This is my first time working on a bike so I want to at least make sure I have my valves set right before I move on the something esle. Thanks for the input.

Which TDC did you get? It needs to the one after the inlet valves close.
 
Yes the intake valve closes right before the marks on the stator and flywheel line up. It looks like I got the right TDC
 
and you need .12mm so you are too tight. also, try doing the 1/6th of a turn method.

My exact process was to loosen the lock nut, loosen the rocker arm adjustment screw, place a .13 mm feeler guage into the space between valve stem and adjustment screw, lower the screw until feeler guage was tight, and then tighten the lock nut. After this, I then inserted a .10 mm feeler guage into the opening to verify clearance was at least .10 mm. I read somewhere that slightly looser is better than too tight so I aimed for the high side. With this being said, my gap should be about .12 mm. Does this seem okay, or should I redo the process with the 1/6 method??
 
try and make morse code with the rocker arms. if you can hear 'tick, tick' 2 yards/metres away JUST - then they are OK. at 3m they should be too quiet and at 1m they should be very audible.
