New player in the SEM replacement?

Thanks Plumbbob.

I have a 2001 FE 650 here with a new HPI stator, but it seems the new stator didn't fix the original problem, so I assume it's not the stator that's faulty. I still have a working original SEM on my 2003 FE501, so I will test with that stator to prove or disprove my suspicion...

Its possible the 'faulty' stator was misdiagnosed and it is in fact the ignition module that's faulty...

If it is the ignition module, should I recommend that he buy the HPI ignition module as well, or are there other options?

Does anyone have any experience with the HPI ignition modules?

Luckily for me the replacement stator cured my problems so didn't need to look at the coil etc.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Sparks,

They said the stator tested fine. I told them I would really like to have a stator that works with my bike. They then asked for pics of my stator. I sent several, and gave them the OEM specs with 3000 ohm on red to black.

I wonder if the fact that the 2001 has the stator on the cover so the flywheel is spinning inverted of "normal" is causing the issue with their timing?

I'll see what they say. If they send it back, or send me another one that has issues, maybe I can send them both to you to check out. I'll pay you to rewind my SEM and you can test the other.

Greg

Hi Greg,

Not only is the resistance spec different on the pre 99 but the way the coils are connected are also different.
The stator you have been sent is more for a pre 99 set up than the year you have.
If you get the same sort back I will guarantee it will react in the same way.

Feel free to send them over and I'll test what's necessary, and or rewind your original SEM.

Regards

Sparks.

kickback damage!

I will report on my experience with RMSTATOR. They did give me a full refund for the stator. Mike called and said that the stator tested fine. He told me he was going to check into it and see what they could determine was happening with it. That was over 3 weeks ago now, and no word from him. I don't think I will hear from them again.

Now for the good part!
I opened up the left side cover and found lots of extra pieces of metal in there. Lost a few teeth from the starter clutch as you can see in the pic. I actually have another gear so that isn't too big a problem. But it also took out the needle bearing in the side cover that mates to this gear, and damaged the case around it also. You can barely see it on the bottom of the second pic. Not sure if I am going to try welding it and then mill the hole out, or bore it and press a sleeve into it. Any suggestions?

I could just remove the gear and only use the kick start also.

Greg

Hi

Sorry mate, not a happy thing.

If it was me I would try to avoid welding, I would go to the sleeve option.

Good luck

Ok here's my experience with RMstator, purchased one for $185 off ebay because because my original SEM was open between red and black (no spark) installed the RM stator and had spark but no start just backfire. Found out with timing light during cranking it was firing at approx. 60 degrees BTDC ! So I removed RM stator and decided to ohm test= 1250 ohms between red and black instead of 3000, 185 ohms between green and black instead of 168, left mounting screws out and positioned RM stator 60 degrees ******** and bike started and ran until stator came loose from housing and chewed up wires. Removed and repaired wires but now open between red and black unless I move and twist bobbin post where red wire is connected. Any suggestions would be appreciated...Sparks are you there ? Can you help ?

are you sure your mains haven't gone?

grab the crank with your hand and try and shake it?

Taffy

ok the reason the stator wires on the RM stator got chewed up was because I had to leave the three mounting screws out in order to turn it enough to fire at top dead center for bike to start, after it started the stator rotated and pulled the harness into the flywheel. I just now checked the crank play and it's tight..no play. I need a good stator or to have my original rewound. I just installed new piston and rings and DVSK and am anxious to get running. Taffy I sent you a message on your online store site yesterday inquiring about stator options, do you have one or can I send you my SEM to rewind and if so tell me how, thanks Steve

Julia will deal with this through the site then Steve.

Appreciate it Taffy as I said however I already sent her a message regarding availability and such a couple days ago and haven't received a response yet....anybody have a good stator ? help ?

update on RMstator progress; they emailed me back requesting ohm readings and pictures. So I provided that. They said they would send me a new one once they verified failure with their tech so I guess that would work for now

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I am having the exact same issue, with the same product.
Has anyone come up with a fix or been successful with an rmstator?
I purchased a non running 2002 FC 550 earlier this year with a bad SEM stator and purchased the rmstator replacement, chalked the backfiring up to a dead carb (retro fit FCR Production carb, which ended up actually being nearly dead)
Ended up replacing all the bearings and intake valves, even bought a jet kit from Taffy, but still have this backfiring issue
Thanks in advance
Miles

Did anyone get this issue sorted?

I picked up one of the rm stators aswell, when I also bought a "beefy" Starter from Taffy, and new battery - Same issue - Backfire through the carb...

Before searching the forum, I also thought, Carb too lean, and/or valve timing issue. Now I have triple checked everything and reground valves, reset clearances, and have completely rebuilt the carb. Compression is good, sprak is good, but timing is a mile out.

I too did the whole "turn the stator without the bolts in", and managed to get it to run for a bit, but as someone already said, it is like 60 degrees out, when the bolts are put in...

Is it wired wrong internally, or have they put the mounting holes in the wrong place>?

you need to get the ignition timing right. why didn't you buy an electrex or get your SEM stator repaired? you can get help with those two?

why?

you're there, i'm here and nobody can help you both. G-R-E-A-T.....:eek::eek:

WELL, GLEAN WHAT YOU CAN FROM THE IGNITION TIMING VIDEOS HERE:
FACEBOOK
TAFFMEISTERS
videos
ignition timing

get your flywheels marked properly. the electrex work better near to fully ******** (there's a word with relevance ....) and back perhaps 1mm at the three screws (advanced). somewhere around there.

regards Taffy

Why? Because that's what I could get quickly. No need to be condescending though, not everyone has your experience.

I have looked through your videos, and they are great help. I have done the timing marks and then continued writing 1-20 around the flywheel so I could see with the strobe, how far out it was.

I am now wondering if the pickup coil is wound backwards.

Anyway- Taffy do you sell ignition modules as well? I may grab a stator off you and just wait...

the Husaberg stator is on the right and all KTMs are on the left. an electrical engineer can get a bit cocky after a while and tell you that the same ignition advance applies to all 400s ar that it doesn't matter too much etc etc. but what if they forget that WE have OUR stator on the RIGHT and NOT the LEFT?

then you get ******** not advanced? the coils in the pick up should be spooled up in the other direction. that's what sparks says anyway! and he is our resident expert.

yes I have Electrex stators in stock but i sold two at the weekend and am out again. will order more today.....

regards

Taffy
