So Hi everybody, I've just arrived from near Preston in the N. of England. I bought a trail bike this year (a Puzey XTR4 300cc :eek:) but having done some trail riding with a friend who has a Husaberg there was a real difference in quality & attitude with his bike.
So I was going to sell mine then look around after Xmas. But that never happens does it? So I look through stuff on the internet and I have just bought a 2003 FX 470E :eek:
I'm picking it up on Saturday, but thought I might as well join the forum now.
Still not sure I've bought the right bike for trail riding, don't know what the gearing & low down grunt will be like.
Any thoughts guys??

My mate has sent me his maintenance regime for his 450.
Is this what I will have to do, seems over the top.

Oil change after each use; Putaline nanotech 10/50
Clean air filter & charge battery after each use.
After every use release pressure from forks and clean/ adjust chain.
Every 2nd use change oil filter and clean oil screen.
Every 2nd use take wheels off and grease bearings.
Every 4th to 6th use check/ adjust valves.

that maint schedule is indeed over the top. borders on anal. wheel bearings are usually sealed.
i would recommend pulling the cam cover and inspect the cam follower bearings and cam bearings, pull the cam chain tensioner and inspect how many clicks are left on it to determine the shape of the chain. reinstall and then set the valves using the 1/6 turn method. have fun.

Ned is right, the 10th digit of the frame number will likely be a '1' and possibly a '2'.

back in 2002 the yanks couldn't sell all their quotas of bikes due to the importers going ****-up. the only two countries that can flog a bike without them being homologated are Sweden and the UK so both countries took a shed load back. by the time they got here and were sold it was 2003. they were going for 1,200 quid each which was a very good price.....

anyway, I'm going to disagree with you Ned on this one. this is thee ratfuck bike, it needs to be in tip top nik all the time. worries are: lubrication to the liner, sunken inlet valves, lubrication to the piston, tappets cupped, lubrication to the liner, cam follower bearings toast, lub..... you get the idea. that is why the tappets have to be done almost every 4 hours. oil every ride.

looked a nice bike on ebay. good luck with it.

Sorry for lack of photos, it was dark when I got back with it today. I'll try and post some up tomorrow.

Went to pick it up from the Wirral (near Liverpool) with my son. The guy seemed really nice, he was sorry to let the bike go but he's moving to Germany. The weather was Biblical!

I got loads of Husaberg kit with the bike from a bottle opener to a fleece and including a full set of brand new Husaberg leathers, which unfortunately are too small for me.

In the deal came a set of Supermoto wheels with tyres and supermoto forks (***********), which weren't even advertised in the deal. Husaberg stand, and a box of spares like starter motor, disk brake, levers, plastics etc. and a Dave cooper Bike rack and tow bar.

There was also a load of new branded clothing: A new helmet, new goggles, new gloves, new boots, a Husaberg fleece & beanie hat, new Husaberg textile jacket & trousers, a Dave Clarke Racing Hoodie & T shirt and a load of paperwork; even including part of the cardboard box the original bike was shipped in plus the original advert for the bike in Trials & MX News for the bike which was sold via Dave Clarke near Preston.

Bugger won't start though!

So Tomorrow I'm going to have a bit of a play around, but not too much, because Dave Clarke's shop is just up the road from me and if I can't boot it up he's going to strip the carb and get it going and then give it a MOT test for me.

I will post up the Vin number tomorrow when I take a couple of photos.

The guy I bought it off is the 2nd owner, the 1st owner lived across the street from him so it's been on the same street since new and I think they've mainly played with it as a supermoto because everything is in very good nick and you can see it's had an easy life.

Well chuffed so far. Just need to get the bugger to start it's been stood for 2 years with old petrol in it, and I don't know what I'm doing with the little lever near the clutch lever etc. I had an XT500 once, but I've never tried to kick up anything with this kind of compression. F... Me!

The decomp lever is to find top dead centre. Pull lever in and keep it pulled in, slowly spin motor with kickstart until you feel it tighten. Return kick start to top, let go of decomp lever, then give it a good kickstart stroke all the way down its travel.
I use eleccy start, only managed to kick it over twice :eek:
Must be pretty close to me cos im not far from Dave Clarkes

Apparently this model has to be kick started from cold, then you can use the elec start once it's warm. Didn't know that when I was bidding, never mind.

Any road I live near Tarleton if you know where that is. Where you at?

I think the carb is varnished with 2yr old fuel, so I'm taking it to DC's tomorrow for an inspection/ service & Mot.
 
so according to the vin, you would order parts for an '02 (would be hard to find parts for an '03 470:p)

Yeah, i know what you mean about the starter, its meant to be for hot starts only, but i use the electric start from cold. Must be the rebel in me - or too ruddy hard to kick more like :D
 
Got it back from the workshop today, the problem seemed to be that my wallet was a bit too heavy and had to be lightened a bit....

Having cleaned the carb out (apparently full of all sorts) there was then found to be no spark due to a corroded stator. Secondhand stator installed and a few repairs to the wiring loom as there were 1 or 2 broken/ cut wires. Finally new rear light fitted and then MOT'd.

So I had a ride down the rack from the workshop and it rides fine, though I will have to lower the gearing so I can trickle along. Stalled it turning it around and it started up on the button. When I got it home I managed to start it 2nd kick.

Everybody at the workshop said it was a good bike.
