Getting too hot??

Bit of background first - just recently fitted a 550 race tuned engine (around 04-06 vintage I believe) into a chassis that I previously had a 650 in. Tt's not been used for a while, been on the shelf for several months at least before I bought it. It starts very well - 1st or 2nd kick (though very hefty kicks required due to high compression!). I haven't had a chance to give it a run yet as it's not road registered.
Now - 2 things I noticed today. It gets hot VERY quickly. I started it and let it tick over (on choke) for about 3 - 4 mins, and the headers were glowing red! It's got a full titanium Akrapovic system that was previously fitted to the 650 if that is relevant. Should I be concerned?
2nd thing - the carb (FCR41) has got an R&D powerbowl fitted, like this one -

After shutting off, I noticed the red screw adjuster had dropped out and was laying down near the started motor. Presumably it had vibed itself loose. I can screw it back in, but as it is numbered 1-4 around the knurled section I assume there should be some sort of stepped action, which I am not getting. Something missing maybe?

Just to add - distilled water only in the rad. Bled through the bleed bolt on top of the head until continuous flow then topped up (engine not running).
 
Red adj bolt is used to adjust air/fuel mixture....if it dropped out you had a very rich mixture in the cylinder. This is the most probable cause of overheating. Also, if you dont have a termo switch and a fan on the bike don't let it idle and not moving for such a long period of time....
 
those screws come very often with a spring that is too short. you should feel it making the screw always a little effort to turn.

you're meant to have a spring, washer and an o ring asa well. te last two will possibly still be up there!

Bugger - no telling where that spring has gone.....
Here is my mixture screw - is it likely to use the standard spring? Any tips for checking whether the o-ring and washer are still there without removing the carb - should they drop out with a gentle tap? I've got another FCR I can rob these parts from temporarily if I can't get replacements in time (and they're compatible). Having looked at the parts diagram, it APPEARS that it's the same apart from the elongated lower section.

Trevor Pope will sell you the full kit if you can't find the spring and o-ring. Mine kept falling out until I bought his kit, doesn't now!:rolleyes:

Use a Flex jet mixture screw as it will never fall out and can be mounted for easy access. I think I paid about $10 for my last one. Its a better solution for those motors that shake.

Should you need to keep and want the one you have, I think I have a new one just like yours still in the package in black that I will be happy to give you for free. I just ask for the postage as I hate nothing more than those who solicit business on forums. Forums are here to help others out without personal gain.

Just remember to check the carb, as the washer and o-ring tend to get stuck in the carb and you would need to pick it out before fitting the new o-ring, washer and spring.

That's very kind - and much appreciated! I need a quick fix for this though so I've ordered the spring kit.
The Flexjet looks like a good long term fix, and I'll definitely look out for one. Only available in the States on Ebay - £25, probably other sources I can check though.

Have u checked Timing? dno if anyone mentioned in the thread. didnt read all posts. i just bought my self a fe 450 -08 and it ran hot resulting in alot of new parts to swap out.
valve cones on top of the valve springs were all blown and the timing were off Points. so new parts allover.

But if u have off timing that means u get the ignite and opening valves at the wrong order. and it will run hot.

ps. dont just check cam. check allso the two sprockets down under where the cam chain is goin for Three dots to aline.
