Still trying to figure this thing out I ve been finding black plastic in frame directly under air filter looks like it is coming from vent on top of cylinder im thinking its coming from guides or plastic bits around cam chain ? Has anyone seen this before bike sat for a couple of years . When I do get started it runs great but still not able to e start . any help will be appreciated thanks

take the left cover down, drain the oil, if you will not be wiser after this, take the valve cover down. my guess is the plastic parts are the teeth of oil pump wheel.

Thanks I'll try that the plastic looks like the black padding on frame like a coarse sponge

Inside the breather pipe from the rocker cover to the frame is a foam filter oil trap. Perhaps this is breaking down. #2 on the attached diagram.

That's what is mine is completely gone thank you now I don't have to take
Apart motor I'm guessing that just keeps blow by oil from saturating the air box any idea for replacement

My 2001 did not come with one but my 2005 did. If it were me I would not worry about replacing it. What concerns me is that yours has completely self destructed. I find this a little unsettling but I suppose it is possible. It could have just been omitted from the factory by mistake (or they ran out).

If you decide to replace it, you could purchase a new one from a 05 model for $3.79.
Part # : 80030089000
I am pretty sure it will fit your 03.

The material that its made out of is very similar to these 3M Paint and rust stripper discs but more flexible. It is also similar to the black frame padding / filter that you mentioned. It is a type of a very course sponge

You may just want to do a breather mod (search this site) which plugs the frame opening and runs a pipe with (or without) a one way high speed check valve. This eliminates any possibility of oil mist, or anything else from the motor, ending up in the carb and back into the cylinder.

As an extra added bonus, in the event that you flip the bike upside down, a breather mod will eliminate the cylinder filling with oil.

Another bonus is that you may in theory pick up a fraction of a percent of horsepower by reducing crankcase pressure if you use the one way valve on the breather pipe.

Its too bad we don't have the gallery back up yet as there was a member, Bobzilla, that wedged a Chrysler emissions check valve in his stock breather pipe. Chrysler Part number is 04300376 and cost is about $30.
I use the Chrysler check valve on my 01 but have plugged the frame and run a 3/4 " heater hose out to behind the countershaft sprocket with the check valve spliced in about half way of the length.

I have a feeling that someone tried to use starter fluid to try and start and blew it out . The bikes last owner never could start it hence the low price I got bike for . When I got bike I thought I smelled a slight hint of it under air filter but po said he never sprayed it .I am almost certain the pieces I found are from that element . thanks everyone I will replace with a 2005 This forum is very impressive

didnt know about the foam oil trap in the original breather, I already bought my bike without it, it was replaced by a long hose ending under the carburator. this makes the air intake cleaner and there are no difficult smoky starts after falls when the bike ends up on its side or upside down.

yea i dont know if just a states thing but our enviromental depts dont like crank case venting to atmosphere . That why in alot of race car put in a catch can system , but with the little oil in our system just capping the frame and putting a little breather cap on the end of a hose would probable be good if not an improvment

Word to the wise:

My bike has a filter to atmosphere installed directly on top of the front breather hole... now oil goes all over the top of the engine. Do not do this.

The rear breather hole is plugged. No issue here.

If you are going to put a filter on the front hole, I suggest you use gravity to your advantage and run a new hose off the front hole, up over the frame somehow... this way the oil will naturally drain back into the case to some degree.

on the first pic the blue hose goes over the frame, on mine the black hose goes under the frame to the right side and ends under/behind the carb. 99% of oil gets back to the head on my bike, with hose over frame even more.

You should have a valve on the vent hose if you are riding Offroad.
