I am having a hard time finding a sprag clutch for my 95 husaberg fe501. Anyone have any ideas of where i can get one? I have searched everywhere and am having no luck. Im beating the hell out of myself trying to kick start it so really need to get her fixed.

Thank you in advance!!!

Hi Redneck,
Pardon my french, but could you explain what a sprag clutch is?
Never heard of it to be honest.
Why do i ask? A guy overhere in Holland has a lot of parts for older Bergs, so maybe you get lucky!
I'll be hearing from you:)

Hi Redneck

Don't go to the Chinese stuff, for me it is way to risky and if you have a problem you can destroy your engine, and it's way too inside the engine to check it :D

There are some well known brands that makes them (Borg Warner and NSK), but they won't sell directly to you, at least I couldn't get it, you must buy it from Husaberg (KTM) or if it's easier for you, I have found that it's the same sprag of the 2008 ktm engine (it might be cheaper ??)

Just one note, if you go to the ktm one, please check if they rotate in the same sense (I just don't remember now), if they don't you just remove the spring and reverse the pieces inside (cams).

Cheers

Not only could the Sprague (Freewheel) be giving you a problem but also the Torque Limiter which as the name implies limits the amount of torque and slips when an extreme amount of force is applied. For instance if you were e-starting and a backfire occurred and there was no Torque Limiter or it failed to slip there could be a few broken parts to replace. This happened with the 2001 models. A backfire would occur and break the clutch hub gear. It was mostly the 650's that broke. An updated Torque Limiter was soon released. The early 05 models also had Torque Limiter issues. They slipped too much.In your case the Torque Limiter could be slipping too easily. Usually it is the Sprague that gives you problems though. When you have it apart it is definitely something you will want to check. Do a search on this site on how to check it.

I have a way of doing it fella. the OEM part is about 120gbp if you can still get it from Husaberg.

I haven't heard of a KTM part that works but if so I'd like to see it.

I can repair yours for about 80gbp but mine have strengthened springs just like the ones in my starter repair kits but bigger. - as said in a PM.

Hi Redneck

Sorry but I might have induced you into an error, I thought the 95 and 97 sprage were the same as mine (97), but I've check and they have different ref.

95-96 freewheel - 250 141-01 ($232,26 at MUNN RACING)
97-98 freewheel - 250 153-01 ($152,28 at MUNN RACING)
2008 KTM (RFS) - H25015301 ($144,67 at MUNN RACING)

As I suspected, the KTM part is a bit cheaper  but it looks that for the 95 is a different part ?? I never saw one, so I can't say.

Again I never saw one 95, but if you measure it and count how many cams the 95 has, you might solve the problem with the cheaper option.
Let me explain, 99% of the times what wears are the cams, and usually the cams are all the same, what is different is the number of cams that one sprage has. So if the 95 has less cams then the 97/98, you can buy the KTM one and just change the cams (very easy job)

About the spring, usually what we do is to shorten the spring, so it has a bit more tension, you can also try a stronger spring (as I did) but you are a bit limited in the diameter of the spring, you can't get much higher. But if you search you can find different spring inside seals (just usual seals), so if you want a stronger spring you must look in to a much bigger seal that we usually use in this engines (check picts).

Taffy, about the KTM sprage, if you need to see to believe it, here is a pictures to you. Did you found a decent sprage cam supplier ?

just chinese crap, not good enough specifications. and they speak really, really poor English so i had to give up. if time was money I'd say I'm owed a thousand pounds for trying!

thanks for the heads up!

Yes, unfortunately no decent brand wants to sell this outside OEM, can't understand ??

If you could find a good contact at BORG WARNER, that would be perfect.
