Why the heck is our chain rubbing the frame?????? HELP!

I have a '05 650 FE, and have noticed that the chain is cutting into the frame on the inside by the counter shaft! There is literally 1mm between the chain's rivet and the frame, and when the master link comes around you can see where it just nicks the frame! How dumb! I keep my chain properly tensioned-just a hair looser than the manual due to supermoto jumps!

What are the solutions? I know this is happening on our bikes! Should I be concerned? How thick is the frame down there?

I only have 30 hours/1600 km's on the bike!

Is there a narrower chain available? I think a I am going to flip the master link inside out and see if that helps? Any ideas? 8O
 
Toss the o ring chain !!! put a cheap roller on it and keep up the loooob... ya gain another MM for shur......ooops now I'm gonna get crap,,,,,,,
 
I hate to say it's normal,but....it seems to the nature of the beast. On a positive note, I have never heard of this being detrimental.
 
Have this on my 02 also. I still use an o-ring chain but take a link from a non o-ring chain (use the same brand). I grind down the pins that normally hold the o-ring and mount the standard link. Now the clips is completly withing the size of the oring chain and doesn't rub anything like the frame or chainguide. I have been doing this on all dirtbikes that I am using an o-ring chain on and it hasn't given any problems yet.

Looks like 2 mm narrower......all the MX bikes that get converted and use a 5" rear with a wheel offset then the roller chain goes on and this seems to be enough to get the chain off the tire......
I have gone to a 46 tooth rear so I will going to a roller as well
 
why not machine down the spacer that sits on the output shaft. this will send in the sprocket further and away from the frame. 2-3mm won't hurt as long as you check athat everything will work sweetly.

Got the same problem on my new FE450 after only 12 hours. I got intouch with the dealer and he said they all do it but it could be because the chain is to slack. I re-checked chain tension and ok, so looks like a design fault. I am not to bothered at the moment but if it gets any worse i may look at Taffy s fix but i am a bit concerned this will throw out front and rear sprocket alignment. This fix may need new dimensioned spacers for rear wheel.

I wouldn't worry too much though. All bergs have it and I haven't seen or heard of one that had the pins of the chain grinded through and break. Or the frame for that matter.
But they could have made everything a bit roomier when designing the bike.
 
you can run the front and rear wheels out of alignment by nearly an inch 8O 8O seriously! might not be good for wear but it'll cope.

i put my 5-speed pantah box in a 600ss ducati and the output shaft was 3/4" shorter. so i turned the front sprocket around to push it out, machined the raer cush drive and rubber spacers etc and bought the chain in close to run near the tyre. i was still 7mm out.

it's never been a problem.

How about a large ball pein hammer to the frame. Its the technique I use to create enough clearance in the floor pan of my old Mazda R100 when fitting the 12A and 5 speed, which is a whole otehr story.

Ok, i'm picking up a real old thread but it seems fitting.
I got this clicking from my 06 FE650. I just couldn't figure it out. It was coming from either tire rotation or chain
I know because it was speeding up and slowing down as I rode and even clicked when the motor was shut down.
So I checked wheels and spokes wheel bearings and brakes and the chain and everything seemed ok.
I have noticed the bare metal area inside the frame on all my bikes from chain rubbing but the chain wasn't clicking when I rotated it.
So I have finally determined the clicking is the master link rubbing the frame while Im riding because of the
sag of the bike makes it hit at that point. It's a brand new o-ring chain and you can see the pins getting close to the frame.
These bikes also have some play in the primary gear sproket so I was thinking of either putting a thin washer right
inside of the clip to keep it towards the motor. But not snug.
Or just grind the pins barely, but I really dont want to do that.
I guess this bike just rubs a little more than the others to make a click sound because all three of my 650s do it
but I only hear it on this one.
Maybe I will just keep riding it as the click gets lesser over time from metal getting grinded away.
It's jus a little anoying.
Anybody put the master link on the inside so the pins don't rub ?

Well, in response to my own post for all of you that own the older bikes that might be interested.
I took a copper washer slightly smaller than the primary gear shaft diameter and hammered it down all around evenly increasing its diameter to fit and at the same time thinning it down to fit as a shim between the gear and clip because there is not much room in order for the clip to go back on.
This worked very well taking up some of the gear play and also preventing it from shifting to the outside and makeing the master link grind on the frame.
It wasn't much but was just what I was looking for since I could see the pin getting worn down already from clicking against the frame.
The clicking is all but gone. I can hear it faintly sometimes which is ok for now.
Also, if you end up running more sag it will cause the chain to grind more on the frame because the frame tapers
in as it goes up. So as you use up suspension the pin will get worn more.
All 3 of my 650s have a bare metal section about the width and length of my little finger and they begin about a half inch above the chain with the bike on the stand so as travel increases so does grinding.

With older type of chain slider, it master link didn't slide on my frame, but since I change it to new design from 2004 it start to rub the frame.

I simply put small part of plastic protection and change it time to time, not some smart solution...but works

Well the shim I made for the primary gear didn't work. I thought it was good but the clip was hanging up on a portion of it.
So click,click,click. This was getting to me.. My other 2 bikes 2005s have rub marks on frame and links but its less
because I can't hear the clicking.
This 06 with the new DID 520 x-ring chain was clicking pretty loud.
So I removed the master link and grinded down the x-ring seats on the chain. And greased up and put on a regular non O-ring master link and new clip.
Not a click out of it.
I will inspect this link periodically for wear and have a few on hand to replace when necessary because the life of the chain will probably out last the link.
