Ok, I own two FE570's, an 09 and a 11. They both run great, but the 11 has to crank over quite a bit longer to get started, especialy when cold. The 09 just fires right up every time. The 11 always fires up but just takes a lot more cranking, and seems to catch slowly, sputter, sputter, then varoom.

Why is this?

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
 
My 11 FE570 does the same thing but on the opposite side of the spectrum in quite hot weather. Sometimes stalling at the lights and not starting for a few minutes...
 
Test your engine coolant temperature sender, or perhaps in khromosones case it's the fuel pump heat sieze drama, definitely has the symptoms. Jake you have the perfect opportunity to diagnose your problem, you have the luxury of being able to swap parts between the bikes and use the process of elimination. My brother's 11 570 had the same problem you describe but he never held on to his bike long enough for us to figure it out. :roll:
 
valve clearances? i don't know the mechanical side of things but have heard hard starting can mean the valves have moved a bit. although the 2009+ FE models are known for rarely needing valve clearance adjustment...
 
I had the same problem that we finally think we have chased down. 2011 FE570S slow starting to the point that I would have to grind on the starter until it would kill the battery.

I also have a 2009 FE450 that starts when you hover your thumb over the button. So I knew the bikes will start...

We put the competition map in thinking that was it, that helped the lean closed throttle pop, still slow/hard to start when cold.

The dealer checked the Throttle Position Sensor, which was just out of spec from the factory, this adjustment made it seem to start better, but still had an issue every now and then where it would not start and run the battery down trying to start it.

We double checked the fuel pump, it worked fine and held pressure with the dealer checking.

Then we decided to back up and start checking the simple things. It ended up being the battery. I noticed that it didn't spin the engine over quite as fast as the 450 does when starting. I would charge the battery and it would show 12.5-13v while not under load. Under load it would drop to about 4 to 5 volts, and turn the engine over, sometimes it would start, but sometimes apparently not fast enough for it fire. Put in a new battery and it starts right up cold or hot, and has for the last couple of months with no more issues.

I bought the 09 with 3500 miles on it. I changed the fuel pump on it, and battery to one of those new tourtech types. I then rode it 1600 miles from TJ to Cabo, she was great.

First thing I did when in bought the 2011 (which had 250 miles on it) was to change the fuel pump, before I even had put 5 miles on it. So that's out.

Then I moved my new high dollar battery from the 09 to the 11 (along with a lot of my other after market stuff), so that rules that out.

As far as mapping, I've never brought either in to flash a new map. The 09 had a factory map switch, I set it on aggressive. When I bought the 11 it had no switch, so I moved the 09 switch to the 11. The 09 still starts when you hover over the switch, and the 11 cranks a while.

I'd take the '11 in and get it unlocked and remapped to the latest competition map. I think it is ~$60, and I'm sure they can also see why the bike doesn't start well. I never take my bikes in for work, but this is one thing I'd do to the Berg. The stock map is really bad and is just there to get the bike to clear epa/dot. Since the '11 is the first street legal one, I wonder if the map has to be especially screwed up before it can be sold as a street bike.
 
When my 2010 FE570 was newer I occasionally remember times when it would take a while for it to start. I use to open the throttle a little and I think that helped.
It has 66 hours on it now and always fires up cold or hot without using the throttle.
I did have a marginally tight Exhaust Valve, maybe it was that or maybe being newer, the engines are a bit tighter?

I'm going to bring it in to a dealer next week and have the ecu flashed. On the phone they said the tps might need adjustment also.
 
If you're running the factory exhaust can, that can definitely be part of the problem. It's terribly restrictive, and no internal modifications that won't defeat its spark arrester function will open it up. I had the same problems with my 2011 570, both cold and hot. The solution for the cold start problem was an FMF can. I also removed the smog devices and had the competition map installed by the dealer, but that just eliminated the very minor popping on abrupt decelleration. The real solution was replacing the factory can.

I am not certain that I have solved the hot stall problem. I have covered the bottom of the tank with reflective material, wrapped the section of the exhaust tube that is closest to the tank, and replaced the fan thermostatic switch with a lower temp unit. The tank and exhaust work was rediculously involved. Geeze, the gyrations you have to go through to get the exhaust mid-pipe out of the bike! I'm not sure it all worked because the weather changed before I could give it a thorough test.
 
I had hard-start issues with my '11 FE570S.

New battery - so that wasn't the issue.

So, I ordered a new injector from KTM (part number: 75041023144 - from here: http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model_years/12334-ktm-2012-350-sx-f/assemblies/240120). It comes with a little in-line filter that goes inside the "spigot" of the feed into the injector housing. Added that and installed the new injector.

BINGO! no hard start. In fact, even during riding this weekend (and it was cold out first thing) it started right up without even touching the cold start button.

It also kept on running (and even re-started after I had turned it off) when submerged almost to the bottom of the airbox.

There was an issue with the auto decomp on some 2011 570's.
Contact your dealer & he can find out if your vin# meets warranty :cheers:

I haven't done anying yet, but the more I ride it. I'm convinced its related to the batteries ability to generate enough rpm, at the beginning of the start.
 
Yes, & that's because the auto decomp is not doing it's job.
 
I believe I also have an auto-decomp problem on my '10 570 as I am having similar problem with starting but it is much worse when hot. After slow single track riding it won't even turn over unless I wait a few or bump the button a few times a to get it past TDC. Been like this since new even with a shorai battery and yes my valve lash is set correctly. I even got Harley shims so I could set valve lash right in the middle of the specs, instead of being on the cusp of too tight.

Is there a superseded camshaft part number? or someway to repair?
 
If the auto decomp does not relieve enough cylinder pressure it will seem like the starter is having trouble spinning fast enough.
 
im new to the bergs and just bought a fx 450. It turns over plenty fast just wont fire until you just open up the throttle, is that common on these things or is there a possible tps issue?
