So i noticed my carb was leaking fuel when i returned from a ride yesterday, and i mean leaking! like it would if you pulled the fuel line off, there was a very big puddle developing quickly so i just shut off the fuel. This happened once before during a long ride where fuel was tight, to cure it i ended up turning the fuel on until it leaked from the overflow - turn the fuel off - go for a ride till it conked - repeat. Eventually the leak stopped.

That was about 6 months ago and yesterday it returned. think I'm gona tackle the carb this weekend as no doubt it will be full of crud. Just wanted to get some advice on how to remove the big awkward thing, also what to look for, i guessing its just a stuck float?

Hi
I've had one problem like that and it was the o-ring in the bottom of the base valve of the float ??
Let me just show you some pictures:

It can look square but its round, its realy an o-ring, and it has to be presed it goes in tight.

Don't have here the dimension I've used, but can check it for you.

I enjoyed your 4 year update thread.I've had my carb out a few times.

Carb can stay connected to the cables and then it twists and lowers and such and comes out top first on the right side of your bike. You can fire it up and ride it down the street to use up most of the fuel first.

Still, you need some rags or a tin to catch the fuel. Can just pour most of the fuel out before you put a wrench to it.

If you are cleaning the whole carb you can still leave the cables as they are. Take the bowl off with carb upside down. Might set up a bucket and a box or whatever to hold it for you in an upside down manner.

The float pin, what which the float pivots on can be cleaned with toothpaste or some other mild abrasive cleanser. That may be the problem as they can get sticky/gummed up.

If you are cleaning the whole deal, a small box you can draw pictures on and put the jets in holes you've made in it can help make sure everything goes back where it goes.

When you figure you've finished, don't put it back on yet. Take a long piece of fuel line and hook it up to the carb inlet and filler up to see if it's fixt.

Can temporarily put the tank back on and fill from the one tap. After you've filled the carb, I'd blow in the tank cap vent to pressurize it and check for leaks.

Oh, pick up that o-ring/seal Zaga mentioned before you crack it open. Try the Yamaha dealer but you need to know a # for it first.

I think it's #37 on the diagram here;

Fwiw, fuel can flow through the head and past the rings with a leaking carb and contaminate the engine oil. Make sure to change the oil after you fix it to be safe. Smell it and if it smells gassy just change the oil only and take a long ride before doing another change, with a new filter this time.
