Not so, Fry. Mine apparently vapor locked and wouldn't restart even after a 30 minute wait, and I've got both reflective material on the tank and a wrapped the midpipe. This is a reliability problem.

I wouldn't call it a reliability problem...but a problem never the less.

If you bike wouldn't restart, its either getting too much fuel or not enough. Too much in this case I am assuming. You have a venting problem. Remove the ball in the cap and you shouldn't experience anymore issues. If you do. You have mechanical problems.

I use the stock hose off the cap and take the ball out and I've never experienced a problem. I have seen your problem on other bikes that had venting problems or with fuel that has a high alcohol content.

Hope it this helps

Fry,

I am using non-ethanol 100% gasoline high test fuel.

I have replaced the black rubber factory hose with clear fuel line, can see fuel bubbling in the hose, so it's obviously venting.

Also, during the 30 minute cool-down the bike was in the shade and I took the cap off the tank several times, and it still wouldn't start.

Vapor lock.

Hi guys,
I have been following this discussion with interest, having experienced exactly the same thing the other day. In regards to earlier posts about bikes being at dealers for 5 months etc, I have to say my New Zealand dealer (Makz Gear in Tauranga) provided exceptional service when I had a warranty issue with my bike (Engine had to be shipped back to NZ from Vanuatu at my expense but he had the engine apart the day it arrived, rushed the new parts from Australia international express and reassembled the cases with a new main shaft and had it back on a plane less than 4 days later. I was back on the bike in three weeks, not a bad turnaround considering...

Riding in the same sort of conditions you've already described (hot, humid and on a very tight twisty track) I had the fan (with the factory thermo switch) running for around 45 minutes straight. My bike is a '12 FE570. I have the standard fuel cap and no heat protection for the tank. The bike completed the track without a hitch, but on the ride home on the bitumen at 60km/h, the bike died and wouldn't immediately re-start. After a minute or so it re-started, then died again shortly after. I waited longer, say 10 minutes and it re-started and ran for longer, but died just as I was getting back to the truck. I ended up pushing it back onto the truck worried that the fuel pump was knackered, but since then it has run without a hiccup, so I'm hoping its just a fuel heat issue and no permanent damage to the pump...

Looking on the CV Powersports website, the reflective film option is $20 and the blanket is $70 - is the blanket that much more effective at reflecting heat?

Howdy Kris. It sounds to me that you and I are experiencing the exact same problem. I used DEI Reflect-A-Cool tape and have no experience with the blanket, but in another thread somebody pointed out that you really can't use the blanket if you also intend to (or eventually wind up) wrapping the midpipe. There is so little clearance between the tank and midpipe that the combination of the blanket and pipe wrap would put the two insulative materials in physical contact, and that would conduct heat directly from one to the other and could make matters worse rather than better.

Attached is a photo of my handiwork on the underside of the tank.
