Hey Guys. I'm a little down right now. I am currently dissasembling my 2005 fs 650e and I noticed that there is a crack about 2" long just above the left side main bearing on the left side case. It's barely noticeable, It doesn't go all the way throught the case. should I worry about it, Am I able to get the case welded in that area. I'll try to post some pics when I get the counterbalancer shaft out.

So i took some pictures. the crack goes all the way around the counterbalancer shaft bearing bore. From what I can see the crack Doesn't go all the way throught the case. So Should I NDT the case and see how big the crack really is or try to get it welded. here are some pics.bike1.JPG[/attachment:20yodrl9]BIKE 004.JPG[/attachment:20yodrl9]

If you are not sure if it is cracked or not heat case up and see if the suspected crack oozes or changes any way at all. If still not sure try a dye penetrate NDT kit and heat case a little before spraying on the dye to help penetrate crack and follow the directions of kit. Make sure you spend enough time wiping all the dye off before using the developer. Do not spray the cleaner on the case while wiping the dye off, a little on the rag is ok. Good luck

I'm going to NDT it today at work. I think the crack is only on one side of the case but I will find out later on today do you think i could grind down the crack and the fill up the void with weld and then smoothen out the surface. I enquired about new cases at the local dealer and there 1300$ plus tax. if I could save these cases for a couple of hundered dollars that's a better option. My only concern is that it's in a crutial area, if that crack progesses the engine could explode.

Just looked at your profile, Sorry about giving you tips on the NDT. I worked in a repair station building lycoming and continental engines for a couple years and I don't miss dye penetrate at all or magnafluxing for that matter. 8O

no worries. I'm actually don't do NDT, I just inspect the parts after they have been NDT'd and then build the turbine engines. But the good news is the case came back from NDT with no cracks. it looks like it's just an odd scoring mark so I'm happy about that.
