Gearing my FE 570

I decided on a 48 tooth rear sprocket. That will change the final drive from 3.00 to 3.43. Not sure if the stock chain will work, but I bet it will if I turn the chain adjustor blocks around. Will advise when it comes and I go about the installation.

T Stretch,

Is your bike a 2009, 2010, or 2011? The 2009s and 2010s came with 13/52 gearing, the 2011s 14/42 gearing - to the best of my knowledge.

My bike is the 2011 model. I just counted the gears to confirm they are 13/48.

Count that front sprocket again. The 2011s came from the factory with 14 tooth front sprockets.

You're right, in my earlier post I said the bike came stock 14/45 and we went to 13/48. I would like it a little lower for the trails and a little higher for the road, so I guess it is right in the middle.

I was running my 570 12 52 ideal in the tight stuff and still had loads of grunt. :bounce3:

I dug out the issues of Dirt Bike and Dirt Rider to see what the did on the stock 2011 FE570. Dirt Bike went to a 14/50 (3.57) final drive ration. They also tried a 14/52 (3.71) but said the bike was a handful in tight sections - almost too tractorish. Dirt Rider ended up with a 13/50 (3.84) - mentioning it was easy to over amped in the tight stuff if you were not careful with the throttle.

Thanks, Tommy, that's really useful. Did either article mention how they got those larger sprockets to fit - reversed the chain adjustor blocks, inserted a link in the chain, replaced the chain...?

that's bollocks!

look, I never see first, are you telling me that in second gear on 13/52 mine's a handful?

I can't believe I'm getting suckered into another bloody gearing thread....I need my head testing.

Received my new 48 tooth rear sprocket in yesterday's mail. What a beautuful part! Even though it's larger than the factory all-steel sprocket, I bet it's a bit lighter. I hope to get it installed tonight.

They fit perrrrrrrrrrfect! I've got the 48, 50 and 52. Cool blue color too!

Unfortunately, I didn't even try with the stock chain. Ordered a blue long chain and cut it to fit. Currently,
I'm running 13/50. Works well for desert and mountain single track, and topped out at 82 two weeks ago
at a dry lake.......

Well, I can answer my own question now. The chain on the FE570S as-delivered from the factory is one link too short to go from the as-delivered 42 tooth rear sprocket to a 48 tooth sprocket. (That's without changing the 14 tooth front sprocket.) One link. Nuts! See photos, and note that with the chain adjustment blocks all the way forward, the hole for the axle is blocked.

Both the owner's manual and the spec sheet describe the chain so: 5/8 x 1/4". I sure hope that's a 520 chain, because that's what I bought!

I was surprised to find that the orginal factory 42 tooth sprocket is aluminum alloy, not steel. It weights only 10 ounces, much less than the new aluminum and steel 48 tooth sprocket.

If you don't stop going on about this friggin gearing
pretty sprockets
uhh it saved 10oz

I'm going to come over there and slowly shove it up your a***. then you'll wish you had taller gearing!

somebody please lock this thread

Geeze, Taf.
I thought it useful to know that you can't use the factory length chain with a 48 tooth rear.
And I didn't save 10 oz, the new sprocket is 14 oz heavier.
I'm sorry you've had bad gearing experiencs in the past, but this isn't one of them.
I do appreciate your having confirmed that a 5/8 x 1/4" chain is a 520.
Russ

you really don't get it Russ :p :p

anyway, I'm starting another 'does my bum look big in this?' thread. :D :D

Taffy

It ain't the first time I haven't gotten it!

That's a good new topic for a thread, Taff. I've wondered that myself with all the protective gear I wear! :bounce3:

Anyway, thanks so much for weighing in on this. The assistance was beneficial!
