Here we are coming into the last lap pricy and I going bar to bar doing 26 minute laps ,? pop? bubble burst, when a voice in the back seat asked what time the old farts class prologue starts tomorrow, greenys doing that I reply thinking it,s still a long drive to Mildura, just hoping to get more laps in than last year, running through what I need to do to finish bikefor check in, stickers, numbers, put shrouds back on and final check, what did I do with the shroud bolts sitting on my garage floor back in Melbourne, crap do a run through the brain on what bike shops are around the area, I will be in Redcliff,s in an hour so give sunset cycles a call ask about the screws, they have a check and call me back, yes mate we have some they even took one off a new bike on the show room floor for me, bloody top people there.
We get settled in Mildura, I finish off applying stickers to the bike, bolt on shrouds load bike and kick back till scrutineering time, so head down find a park and spend an hour in the line, get checked park bike then head up to the brewery to catch up with tuffy, Con from Otway trail tours and a few other people and throw back a few of the brewery,s made ales.
Head out to the prologue on Saturday it was sunny and the ground was looking dry with a bit of dust around, as the prologue went on, the wind started to pick up on checking the weather report there is meant to be some overnight rain that will be good to keep the dust down.
Greeny comes back in and the first words out of his mouth is, think I f&*ked it more better go to St johns and get it checked, this is the shoulder he stuffed at Finke last year and had an operation on in Feb, being self-employed he was not going to risk it more, we got our start number and headed home, I spent the rest of the day doing tourist stuff with the family then going pizza for tea as the rain started.
Holy crap what time is it, 6am time to get up and head out to the race, still raining get everything sorted, geared up chat to a few people ran into Kurty, Bear and a few others around the pits, briefing done, pics with tuffy sorted, camera mounted time to line up and get put in the line, rain has stopped at this stage, watch as the pros and ironmen start them wait for us clubman & pony express teams to go as the buggy go,s past it,s on, so I screw it on and see who you beat into the first corner, beat a few and head off to do the rest of the 33.4KM loop, liking the gearing I have keeping the bike in the meaty part of the power and tracking well, did have Chad Talbot set my clickers 10 minutes before lining up(Thanks Chad) just set my mind on passing people without getting tangled up in accidents, which I was doing ok then went down a couple of times so backed off a bit then it started to rain glad I had roll offs so I pushed on and had a couple more soil samples along the way, have to say I loved the long straights was doing 115km at one stage and toby and smarty went past me must have been doing 150 I reckon makes you feel you,re going backwards.
Finished the first lap refuelled had an energy bar and Stu was not up to doing a lap so went out and did a second one more rain and soil samples landing on my broken rib so with a couple of rest stops, half way through the loop I started to loose clutch on the berg I try adjusting it but no luck, so carry on with the rest of the loop but decide that it,s better for me and the bike to stop now than stuff something.
