Manual says 90 hrs for new piston, camshaft bearing, conrod bearing, crankshaft main bearing.

Just wondering what you guys have been replacing and after how many hours.

Is it really essential to do this at 90hrs. (guessing it is related to your style and type of riding).

Did you guys wait till you had a problem etc and then do them.

Thanks

I know a couple people that changed only their piston @ around 120 hrs still ran fine but they changed it anyway. They said the piston was still good just the top ring was below spec. Since they already bought the piston kit they went ahead and changed it and im pretty sure they left the valves alone

Genuine Main bearings are supposed to be replaced at 70 hrs if they last that long. Ive made a 2nd job for myself in my workshop replacing the crap originals with some of my own brand. Unfortunately most customers have let the bearings go too long and its cost them a packet to fix the damage.
Your inlet valves will need attention around the same time and if you have over 100hrs on the inlets chuck em and replace them plus get the seats cut, exhaust valves will be fine. The exhaust valves can be cleaned up but the inlet wear on the face that much if you regrind them you can almost shave with them. New valve seals of course.
The pistons are good quality and usually reusable but a set of rings is all thats needed most times up to 150hrs.
A cam chain is on the list as well there cheap so just do it.
Ive done hundreds of these engines and have seen this wear pattern in most.
Oh ive noticed your in Sydney and did i may have forgot to mention i rebuild these engines in Orange NSW just over the mountains from you, most customers just put the engine in a box and freight it to me from anywhere in OZ.
I was the Berg dealer out here for years, check my previous work out on this site if you need something done its all positive. I have all parts in stock.

i would find it strange or very rare if the inlet valves didnt need replacing, you can tell as soon as you remove the head as the valves are flush with the head and sunken in, they should be proud and raised its the first thing i look for and i can include them in a quote without stripping the head. They should look the same as the exhaust valves (raised). For some reason they are hard on inlet valves but not as bad as the older KTM RFS engine 525 etc, they actually to use the same valves but the Berg will preserve them a bit longer.
If you dont know me yet check my reputaion on this site i have all positive feedback for my rebuilds.

70 hrs to do bearings on a new berg? Man I hope not i plan on running mine till she starts puking metal. J/K but seriously I would hope the lower end would last longer then 70 hrs i know several people that haven't had to do anything except a piston and some rings

Isn't he asking about a 2010 model FE450..

I think it was -1 Celcius out at Orange NSW this morning. Orangeberg probably couldn't see the 2010 FE450 heading of the post through the frost on his PC screen :coldcold:

Yep sorry guys wrong year model, and it was below Zero at my house this morning and snowed yesterday so things are a bit slow to get started. Oh well got a good plug in for anybody with a pre 09.

if you go by the thread on katoomtalk then it's worth saying you can never take for granted the way rings sit on a piston. I THINK I get all my rings separate from the piston anyway.

it could be that the spring and the rings aren't sat right on the scraper ring. the other thing is that the headgasket isn't sealing right and the smoking isn't smoke. a leak into the cylinder after each overnight stop?

regards

Hey Taffy,

For what it's worth, I had the puff of smoke after the over night sit on start up, and solved it by correcting the oil height on my 09. I had too much oil in it.
