I found this old photo of myself and a bloody quick Husaberg rider at that time, this was taken at the World Six day enduro in Traralgon in Victoria Australia back in 1999.
It says 3 time world 500 Mx champion on the back, from memory he won his class on a 400 Husaberg and helped Belgium to a podium in the teams in his first ever Six day. I even think he rode with a fractured arm. we watched him on day 2 leave a control on a drowned Berg backfiring and i thought his race was over.

What a ballsy effort almost as big as his come from behind win with no goggles in the second wet moto at the Broadford Vic round of the world 500 MX titles in 2000 passing Darryl King on the last lap. On a KTM 520 that year and world title no 4 i think.

what a legend is Joel Smets

It must not have been long after this, maybe 2000 or 01 then when i met the legend in Northern Ireland, at what i thought was a bit of a club race to be honest. He was such a down to earth fella and just an ordinary bloke. But when the gate dropped, him and Gordon Crockard knocked lumps out of each other all day.

WHen out riding all my buddies tell me Yamaha were the first build a competitive 4t mx bike, all the Orange people pipe up and say "no way, ktm were the first" they will then argue till there faces turn from orange to red because they are convinced KTM do everything first. At this point ill say "hasn't anyone heard of Joel Smets" ill get a few blank looks and then the Yamaha vs ktm argument will continue and ill sit down and sip my coke.

aahhh 99 what a year, I bought my first brand new bike that year, a WR400. They changed the way people looked at 4t's, I know it changed the way I looked at them anyway.
