Taffy likes Twins

when I bought a Berg everyone said they were unreliable. wot a load of BS that is.

aprilias gotta be the same ? although I also have to ask why if you're only after 80 Hp then why bother with the expense of a twin?

very interesting! nothing since 2005 though....shame!

maybe look into this one I think its an XJ yamaha or something

popular hillclimb twin they go out to 800 , looks good except for the aircooling

that's an old 60s70s XS650. they are real old sidecar beasts!

I love the way the engine canted forwards for hill climbs. I trust they don't ride them downhill to get back to the paddock!

I think if only it was more reliable, the aprilia 550 is the engine but I had a husey owner here last summer who tried to explain how delicate (re: phucking expensive) that engine can be.

of course every trade has **** in the workshop....

pretty sure any aprilia bugs could be fixed but yep if something breaks then rebuilding everything on a twin is is x2

Bergbro i think i answered my own question we're in a bit of a twilight zone between a big lightweight single and a mid sized twin

once the piston goes above 102mm it gets heavy so then the crank has to be heavy for balance and once the stroke goes over 80mm the crank again gets heavy and the piston speed gets nasty

ideally I think a 102x80mm single tuned off its head with a lightened crank to reduce mains load would be the best compromise

for 80hp sidecar engines GWR is there with his 660s in the katoom 530 bed. billet crank and bigger mains than the husey though

A lighter rider will give more acceleration per cc, so less cc will do the same , enabling lighter crank, lighter piston...
When a diet is not an option, turbo perhaps?, will it not work on a big single if you lower compression a little to make room for more combustibles?

lighter rider yes but not less CC smorgy.

you get to a point like bushie says where a major rethink of the engine is required. you go as far as you can with that engine and then that is that.

as for turbo-ing a single. it's out of the question....the pulse every 720 crank degrees is about the worst thing i can think of and then to put it on a sidecar would be even worse.

GWR have the kind of budget we all dream of. I've just had the crank lock on a race engine. that's the second crank for two different teams. and what is the only thing I don't touch in my engines? the crank.

as for the aprilia. when they let go Damon, you will need all the tea in china to pay for it and it's only after it has let go that you understand that it might let go!!!!!!

im not into the aprilia idea at all, chinese tea is more apealing

Smorgys idea to reduce reciprocating weight is great hes often said I should get an MMX rod, they don't make one for the 35mm big end though so it would need to be a group custom order (BTW anyone interested ?) and lead time could be 6-12 months.

a Ti-moly pin and a Ti rod could be organised quicker, I have Ti pin to test.

for now though the 105mm piston works nicely in the bigger is better approach albeit a bit heavy, the head still lifts but for hard rides of only 2-4 hours its fine. still enough water left at the end, or it can go all day if I put on my Tutu and follow the 450 mob on "single trail"

taffy the cranks locking up.. this is the big end? 32mm or 35mm pin? and how is the 666 quad crank handling the abuse?

In the words of 'the watergate scandal'
it's a 'non-denial' not 'a non-denial denial'

a 32 and a 35.

Haha! What a project! I hope those guys are feeling comfortable with the effort/gain ratio! I applaude the determination and skill, but I have little understanding for the purpose. I realize, of course, that maybe I should just keep my mouth shut. :D

it's an american thang!

you gotta be bad to the bone

25 lb crank 8O 8O 8O

next development 50lb bar weights to go with the "inherrent engine characteristics"

:D :D perfect diplomacy Dr-C

I like the 35kg 800 2T. "Virtually no smoke or smell". Even more then if you can add the variomatic on a bike.
Would a 600 reach 28 kg?
