Any does and don'ts that experienced owners can pass along to me or other new owners? I am thinking in terms of mechanic problems and avoiding things which may cause accelerated wear or mechanical problems....for example - how long to warm the bike up; RPM ranges to avoid; highway speeds for a long period or the reverse lugging the engine-Anything like that just so I don't end up with a pooched engine before it's time. Areas to watch on the bike for bits that like to fall off or warning signs??? Also I bought the stainless steel reusable oil filters does anyone else use them? Anything at all to help out is appreciated thanks!

RE: Do

I'm a new berg owner as well and will be interested in the replies to your query. One thing that I found right off the get go was that my berg came with way to much oil in it from the factory. I had to drain out 250 cc of oil to bring the level down into the viewing range on the sightglass. Something to check if you haven't already!

RE: Do

11 hours on mine and 400km. Lost the lock nut off the rear break adjuster and cooked the rear disc. The rubber duffus for supporting the side-stand has fallen out and I have a small oil weep from my clutch reservoir, at the lever end. Otherwise all is good. Been riding pretty hard, so did an extra oil change at 8hours, there was still a fair bit of swarf, so I think it was worth it.

RE: Do

Everything will be in the Doc mate but i know what ya mean, an easy to read bullet pointed list maybe to glance over every now and then ?
The oil level is in the doc too. there was a factory update re: oil level, unsure exactly what years it applies to, i just know it applies to mine.
If you mean berg specific theres probably not much other than the general important rules. not trying to teach you to suck eggs, i dunno how much bike 'mechanicing' experience you've got but heres what i stick to:

DO
*check oil level before and after every ride !
*check coolant level before every ride and that cap is on properly !
*Ride gently for first few miles to warm it up properly, dont labour the engine or rev it too high.
*stick religiously to oil change intervals

DONT
*Get lax about checking things like tyre pressures, chain tension, brake pad wear. If they start to get worn out of tolerance change it ! It costs less in the long run !
*Just go wrenching bolts up if you remove them, got a torque wrench and use it !

Hope thats a start

My grandfather was a mechanic in WW2 and passed alot down to my dad. Both he and i swear by a few things.

1) Kick it in the guts don't use elec leg from cold. Warm up till radiator tank is warm. Turn off and let heat soak for a couple of minutes while i finish getting suited up.

2) Oil and filters are cheap. Buy the best oil and filters you can afford. It will work out cheaper in the long run. I change my oil after EVERY ride and filter every second. DO NOT FORGET your AIR filter! I change mine after 6 rides as the foam degrades because of products we use to clean and protect.

3) LOCTITE! LOCTITE! Lockwire and cable tie everything!

4) Ride within your ability. Stay upright or sideways.

5) I ride a 650 so i always take clean undies just in case.
:laughing8:

Probably a lot more but its late and i'm tired.

cheers
Todd

First off... your berg is more important than your girl!!! Give her a LOT of love
Don't let any one work on your bike! Mg is very soft and sadly you'll strip thread faster on you bike than on your girl.
I learned that the hard way... I'm getting myself a torque wrench now (was woundering on the size though... 5-20Nm, 1/4"?) Specs for torqueing nuts and bolts?

I got did some searching and got a SnapOn Techwrench. It's digital and does everything I need on all my bikes, switches easily between inch pounds, newtons and foot pounds. Nice wrench.

If you have to work on your bike or get a leaking gasket on the clutch side READ THE DOC. The kickstarter shaft has caused more trouble than all other problems combined I would guess. It falls out of its slot if you start taking things apart without holding it in place.

That ticking and clacking noise? Its the cam chain and/or auto decomp. READ THE DOC. Check your cam chain tensioner! If you have a bit of knowhow swap to the double valvespring config. and the lighter camchain (See Taffy). DO NOT re-use your head gasket, it is now stuffed. Take photos of your work as you start to do it. Those dots on the timing gears are not just for good looks.

If you still arent sure ask on this website. It is the Mecca for the best dirt bikes in the world.
