i reckon those marks are from rough use of valve spring compressor for installation or removal

never seen them on new stuff only on the valves in a 2cnd hand head i got from ebay

The head refurb is underway! Spring off, valves out and oil seals being changed.

Just thinking about rebuild and wondering do people use sealant when rebuilding the head?

Managed to get down the garage today.
Removed pretty much everything around the engine.

The top works are all looking OK but soon to be upgraded.

I having trouble getting the left side cover off? It seems free most of the way around apart from the front bottom end.?

Had to go back to the garage to check my sanity. I found this. Well I had seen it earlier but didn't think much off it. I think there's a bolt under it.

Hi Greg,

yes - there is a bolt under it (see attached picture).

Don't forget to remove the waterpump impeller before you try to get the left side cover off!

To seal the rockerarm cover I used Hylomar (that's what I had left over) - works fine so far - no leaks within the last 6 months.

Hmmm.....

i am working on a 2001 650 with an oil leak in the same position as the bodge-it on yours Greg (crack in the sidecover where the bolt head seats).
wonder if its a common weakness?

Well it's off! Luckily the bodge wasn't upto much. And now the cover is off. All looks pretty good inside.
