'08 FE450 MX update

Set the sag and took the '08 FE450 out to the local MX track for practice yesterday. The track got good and choppy as it was quite crowded.Makes you wonder who works anymore?

While it wasn't a huge difference it was for the better and the bike was once again a pleasure.I'm very pleased with everyting and I'm waiting a ride or two more so I get the suspension good and loosened up before I massage the clickers. My initial feel is that I need to stiffen the front just a hair and perhaps soften up the rear a smigden if at all.All in all it's pretty good stock thus far.

The motor needs nothing. It's buttery smooth and yet still has plenty of pull for my abilities.I can see where the smooth consistent power delivery will be a bonus in the final laps of a race.It carburates great and has no hesitations or flat spots and I've not stalled it once.I think it'll be good as is when I take it to the local hare scramble in the next month also.If you haven't guess yet I love this engine and I can only imagine how much fun a FE550 must be if it's at all well mannered as the 450.

Handling wise it's very straight forward and I've not had any weird glitches pop up and yesterday's track would've certainly made head shake appear if it was present with the high speeds and chop that it provided. The Berg turns and jumps well and carries it's weight well. The only thing ergowise I could see changing for my intended usage is the fuel tank but it's more then ridable as is.

Oh and of course ya gotta love the magic button!

Glad to hear that everything is going your way with your new ride.

A couple of thoughts.......

As far as the suspension goes......... I think you are on the right track (no pun inteded) You might try going 1/8 to 1/4 turn counter clockwise on the high speed compression adjuster (softer) on the shock. This will help the bike settle a bit more in the rough in the rear and get a bit of weight off of the front.

Or, you might try going with a little less rebound in the front to let it ride a bit higher in the travel, and you will still have the initial plushness for the chop, and this will help keep it on the higher end of the midstroke as well. The only down side to this is that you might notice a little loss of grip on the front during cornering over flat hard pack.

Another easy adjustment to make is to add 10cc's of oil through the air bleed holes on top of the forks, this will increase the bottoming resistance, however, you will decrease the air gap on top which might cause a loss of initial plushness, which you could probably compensate for by backing out a click or two on the compression.

the extra 10cc of oil only affects the latter stages of compression damping - like the lasyt third.

Thanks for the tips.I'll give them a try after I put a couple more hours of break in on the suspension.

All in all I couldn't be more pleased and unlike the coming new model I love the simplistic nature of this soon to be old version. In fact it's one of the things that played a big part in my choosing a Husaberg all along and now with the refinement and quality that the latest version has it's a helluva lot of fun to be back in the Berg saddle again.
