I Ride: Husaberg FE501e 2003
Husaberg UK sidecarX end of a short era

On Sunday we had round one of the British SidecarX championships held just 5 miles from me at mepal.

for this season 8 times British Champion Stu Brown, who has won the last 4 on a Husaberg 628, has gone back to Zabel

So it was up to Dan and Joe Millard to keep the Husaberg flag flying on Sunday. not too bad you might say given that towards the end of last season the Millards had better results than Brown at home and abroad.

For this season it is rumoured the Millards have gone back from the 102mm bore/660 to the 105mm bore 700.

so we gathered on Sunday knowing that out of 4 seasons, 7 meetings a season and three legs a day - that makes 84 races. 81 had been won by a Husaberg!

In race one the Millards got away on the deep sandy circuit and built up a big lead. after twenty minutes they a=were some 10 seconds ahead and then the two lap board came out. Brown on the Zabel was in third unable to get by Jenkins (Zabel) but then suddenly, on the far side of the circuit, the Millards stop. the bike had seized it is believed although last year they thought that and something had jammed.

this wasn't a good start and given that Brown rides tactically to finish they would have to take a lot of firsts and Brown would simply roll on in second place.

Race two and this time the Millards lead from the off. they build a huge lead and their father Mark keeps putting out a pit board to 'slow'. the lead keeps growing until it is some 20+ seconds and the Husaberg is flying!

out goes the two lap board after 20 minutes and they Millards duly complete the two - well almost because with one curve and a corner to go the end of their crank snaps off.

the team are gutted! I mean distraught because they have just seen their British championship go up in smoke....

they didn't come out for race three as it would be held within the hour. Browny won this and so he has a 72-0 lead already and the championship IS gone!

no Husaberg win either. I was on 'cold turkey' all Sunday night.

France and Etheridge had 3rds and 4ths during the day but aren't likely winners.

what with the Millards excellent record last season and then two failures at the last round it means that as far as UK racing goes, their last two British rounds have been a disaster.

let's hope they win races to the end of the year even if the championship is gone!

regards
