Here's one for Taffy. How far in advance of the ride do you need to book flights to get a reasonable fare ? Also are there certain dates/ months that are best (cheapest) for travel ? If you need to book them by summer we got a couple of monthe to decide and get to the planning. Next question for everyone, we have added a couple more Bergs to our little riding group here in Durango, but there still are those hapless honda friends of mine, they are keen to go wherever this thing ends up being. Can I bring them if they have beer ?

I do think everybody will have a great riding experience at China Hat, but I wanted everybody involved to be aware of what the camping situation is like. We can make it work!

Portable crappers can be brought in for the weekend if need be.

Portable water can brought in as well (cistern) if needed.

We all know the effect that Bobs Chile has, but we can't hold him responsible for the state of Moabs septic system (even though it was quite the coincidence that the toilets plugged after the chili feed). Oh and by the way for those chili lovers out there that have not tried Bobs chili, you are truly missing out.

I think that in order to make china hat work is going to do like Velo said and rent some R/Vs. It really is going to depend on the number of attendees as to what needs to be done though. Maybe we should start with a rough head count and hammer out a date first?

Prime China hat time is Late March to early-middle May, but usually by June it is getting pretty dry and there are two organized events being held in that time period as well, which we may or may not wish to avoid, the dates for these do not get posted until December I believe.

Stoveguy, camp would not be the same without your clan, it was quite entertaining watching you guys get that Honda running and we had a blast around the campfire with them as well.

Hope this helps, I'm gonna go knit Taffy a beer cozy.[/u]

ha! ha!" even i can't understand a word that darn brit says......!

so portland is the nearest? i don't think there is a direct flight for that one but i made a connection for houston and for phoenix before. only LV was direct for me.

as for prices, well oddly enough midweek to midweek is cheap and because the flight never fills in march it doesn't really get anymore expensive.

the season will change the costs though and i'd be pleased if we did the trip just after easter by 14 days or just before it by 14. the lack of clash with school children will help.

easter is 10 - 13 april.

what altitude is china hat at? i see the latitude so i trust the weather and temps are similar to the UK.

regards

Taffy

If I remember right, altitude is 3500 to 4500 ft, Temps in March will be lows averaging in the 20's to 30* F, Highs in the 40 to 60*F range, this can vary of course.

Hey Bob, That is the snow zone, and while the amounts vary from year to year, we should expect the higher trails to have some white stuff on them at least on the north facing sides of the trails. For those that have never been riding in the snow, it is kinda fun once you learn to relax, think of it as really slick mud. Our soil here does not hold moisture for very long, so once the snow melts, the dirt usually goes dry. March would be prime moist dirt time, with a chance of snow up high.

I am going out to China Hat this weekend, I will take some pics and give a trail condition report.
