Sorry about the delay with registration, I was working on a better system to prevent the spam from getting through. A new and improved system is in place and it's much easier to register and join the community.

years ago they gave the Aussies the first of the new models as in November you are coming into your selling season while we all go into hibernation and save up!

we sold 501s throughout 2001.

this is the first I've heard that any of the 2001 engines had anything but the 32mm big end. I'd like to hear it said by a few more people and your old importer would know wouldn't he.

Aaron has a 2002 and as such he should be fine with the 550 rod kit.

Hi All,

Zen - no worries, happy to be here! Feel free to delete my aaron_hogan user name.

Sico - I swear this is the weirdest Australian Summer. This is the mythical fifth season of "Sprummer" - cool and occasionally wet. We will probably get a stinking hot February now.

Bahnsy - good advice. Is there a part number on the rod I should be looking for or do I need to size up the pins and centre to centre length?

Taffy - I'll try the socket trick or improvise with a length of pipe welded into a little stand, lay the bike over and bash it through.

Also, I'll grab a frame number/engine number if that helps and any other relevant identifiers. (prays for late 2002 build date)

just measure the pin. from the outside of the crank, they "appear" to lose 0.5mm so your vernier will say 31.5mm (they are 32mm as said). I can't contemplate 30mm....

also, the 30mm 501 cranks were all pork chop weren't they? I'm no expert on the early engine so shoot me down but the few I have pulled apart have all been porkchop.

Still having difficulty with the swing-arm bolt.
(wheel off and shock undone so no tension on anything)

I used a section of pipe with a flat plate welded to the bottom.
Layed the bike over so the bolt was over the centre of the pipe and the pipe was hard against the frame.
Gave it a massive belting with a BFH.
It didn't budge.

What's next? Do I have to make a one-off custom hydraulic press out of steel and a car jack? Or a big "G" clamp? Heat?

Make a slide hammer like this?

I just want this donk out of the frame.

Cover it all in WD40 over night and try again. Make sure the WD40 goes in everywhere.

reductuer h72 from bunnings is good stuff

if nothing works have to cut the bolt in 2 places right next to the cases through the steel inserts either the ones in the cases or the inner swingarm bushes then get new inserts and a new bolt.
