I Ride:
valve rocker arm thingies. When to replace?

So, my 05 fe550 barely gets ridden. It only has 5000 miles on it (240 or so hrs). The cam chain still has a couple clicks of adjustment left, but I figure I should replace it before long. I've adjusted the valves 6-7 times over the life of the bike, and they are always pretty close (i use the 1/6 turn method, cuz i'm lazy).

I'm told that the valve rocker arms or bearings or something commonly wear out on these bikes, and their ktm cousins. how can I tell if mine are worn out? I spend most of my money on beer and gasoline (my other bikes actually do get ridden), so i don't want to squander money unless i need to, and i'm not sure I'm up to doing the work myself, unless it's easy.

Velo, The upper end parts that are reputed to wear out frequently are the rollers on the tips of the rocker arms. On Bergs of about 2000 vintage, the little bitty rollers were not heat treated correctly, and needed to be changed regularly. On newer Bergs, they seem to last quite well. If and when they go, you will begin to hear a good bit of valve noise. When you check your valve clearance, there will be lots more than you expect. The tiny little rollers in the bearing will grind themselves up, and be gone. They are easy to replace. What I have not yet found out is, do KTM parts cross over to Berg on this item? Anyone know? Another tip is chrome bits and pieces in the oil filter and screen.

what does the 7.6,mm refer too?the pin size? how can i tell if mine are old or new?

they changed in 2004 so guess which? to be absolutely sure you need to half press them out and measure them.

hmmm, i dunno but i think there is some extra center pop marks round the bearings on my rockers so maybe they have been done? how can itell old from new? how can the pin size be different?

it is different cos it is!!!!

you will have got through at least 1 or maybe even 3 sets of them so there will always be plenty of punch marks. early pin size was 7.8mm. one won't go in the other and the other falls through the other. clear as mud?

Been there, done this twice now with my 05 FS650E.

At 200 engine hours I noticed a shiny metal shavings party on the magnetic drain plug. Upon further inspection I found the roller bearings on the rocker arms were not turning smoothly. The bearings had disintegrated and found their way to the oil filter/screen and drain plug magnet.

Again at 400 engine hours I found history repeating itself. Always pay close attention to any swarf you find on the magnetic drain plug. It's a great barometer for any internal motor issues.

Instead of trying to press out and press in new rocker arm roller bearings I opted for brand new rocker arms complete with new roller bearings. Easy fix and easy to replace.
