sudden rattling noise

hi guys, today while riding bike developed a funny rattling noise. stopped to check if something like headers got unscrewed but could not find something.
i start her again and at idling there was no sound at all-it sounded like usuall. when i twist the throttle a bit it does make this rattle, it is present when rpms are above 3000-3500 rpms. it sounds like something metal part gets coordinated with the motor frequencies.

ok, went immediatelly home and open the head cover then the head and finally i removed the cylinder to check the piston and the con rod . everything seems to be in perfect condition ( THE BIKE IS RECENTLY REBUILDED WITH PISTON ROLLERS NUTS AND STUFF)

then i openeded the clutch cover for a visual inspection but with no luck
anyway re assembled again-started but still the same

note that at idling it sounds sweet as before.

it runs also very powerfull as before.

it might be something really really stupid but maybe not.

3 days ago i changed the whole clutch assebly using 2000 model parts which were used but in perfect condition compared to mine.

hope to sort it out

RE: sudden rattling noise

try the "hose stethoscope" method. take a 2' or so legth of about a 3/8-5/8 hose and put it to your earand move the other end around the bike to find where the noise is coming from. you'll at least be able to get close to the area making the noise. the rattling mine made was related to radiator shields.

RE: sudden rattling noise

Hey guys,

My '96 FE400 has seemed to develop a similar rattle...I fear it is a primary gear or cam chain issue. Also, at the same speed as Oyk's. I am going to check all items to be tight before pulling the clutch cover...inclusive of removing the exhaust wrap...

thanks for the feedback, a stethoskope is indeed a good idea

hey markt nice to hear that we have propably the same problem i hope it will make it easier to find out the source
yesterday i checked piston-cam-valves-followers-rollers-con rod and stuff, they are excellent. the cam chain tensioner is about 4 notches before end.

primary gear is tight and no broken teeth on it or on the basket.
i did not dissasemble the clutch though.

cam chain is a suspect as you correctly mentioned, but i have not heard any berg with loose chain so i don't know how it suppose to sound.

Another thought cam to mind...how about piston slap? Since the performance is not really effected, and the sound occuring in the region of heavy load...this makes a wonder, too. Really, if the chain was loose, it would make noise throuout the engine speed range, but mostly at idle...mine does not make this sound at idle.
