Water leaking from weep hole whats needed to fix?

I just recently purchased a 2002 Fx470E. The problem is as follows:

There seems to be a water leak from the weep hole. Im thinking it might just need a new seal but I have read other forums about this problem and maybe should replace the bearing inside along with o-rings. Im somewhat new to the Bergs although my dad has a 1999 FS650. Whats needed to fix this problem?

From what i have been reading it seems like i will be replacing a seal, bearing, and an o-ring.

If anyone knows were to get these parts or has any helpfull comments, send them my way. Thanks

wpeteman,

Soon you will have learnt your lesson - not to listen to what people say on other forums about Husabergs!

Now, if you had oil weeping out of that hole you would need to get inside the clutch case to replace the seal, possibly the bearing as well. But as we're only talking about coolant here, only the coolant water seal needs to be adressed. This should be a part that will cost you between 25pence and a couple of pounds depending on where you get a replacement from. Choices are a local Husaberg dealer oo a local bearing supply company.

All you need to do is remove the water pump housing only, draining the coolant. Remove the little circlip holding the impeller on to the shaft and pull out the impeller. You will also see a very small rod stuck through the shaft - make sure you keep this in a safe place because obviously it is responsible for driving round the impeller.

You'll now see the seal that is leaking. You can prize this out without taking any other parts of the engine off. Get a new seal and to refit, tape over the recess on the shaft to stop the new seal from getting stuck in it on the way back on. and apply a really small amound of lubricant to help it slide on. Place the seal in position so that its flat face is facing inwards towards the engine (or you can see the small diameter spring closest to the shaft facing you).

Hopefully this should sort the problem out for you.

If this doesn't work, or you notice any play on the shaft when you do the seal replacement you may need to replace the bearing.

Hope this helps,
Simon

whosahberg,

You can do it with a screwdriver - just be careful not to damage any of the surrounding metalwork. Or, like me, by shere coincidence you might find you've bend a hole punch (Like a screwdirver but with a sharp pointy end) accidently and the pointy bit has turned into a quite useful 90 degree hook - does the job perfectly. But a long and fairly small screwdriver will do the job fine.

Cheers,
Simon

buzzard helped me pull my seal and we drilled two small holes in the seal and then extracted with two small screws. it can be a bugger to drive the new seal in straight as i failed the first time. took it to the ktm shop and the mechanic champrored the hole with a dremmel tool and slid it in. he said he always champhores the hole. charged me 15 bucks plus the seal.

lets face it , if we can change the w/p seal without removing the cover thats a real bonus .

and develop a system of removal and installation that is smooth and efficient

RE: Re: Water leaking from weep hole whats needed to fix?

I just had the same exact problem, as I just refilled my radiator and was losing coolant fast from the weep hole (and now I understand why I ended my last ride with very little coolant left, around 1/3 of the radiator, nothing in the overflow).

The seal on the 2001 is composed of a rubber ring with a groove to accomodate a circular spring, which in my case is in bad shape (I guess whoever did some work there did not think it was worthy of replacing). I do not think it is a "25 pence" part. It's obviously a Husaberg part and should cost a bit more, unless you manage to cross-reference with something from the store (please let us know).

Anyway, it's fixed, I removed the circular spring, pushed the rubber seal back with a screwdriver, made sure it was all the way in, and reinserted the circular spring. Obviously it needs to be manipulated with care when you go deep into the engine, or it just slips off with time. Water pump cover back on, a bit of coolant through the hose attached to the pump: no leak. All coolant in: no leak.

2002s and 2001s seem to be similar. I don't remember what year your bike is, Colby, but it does not sound like it's the same at all!!!

(Note to self: order new seal.)

hi,

Q1....the seal is the oring on the shaft, isn't it?

Q2...is this correct about the way the seal faces?

thanks

Q1- There are a couple of seals, the o-ring on the shaft being one of them.
Q2- This is correct.

My 2 cents.
If you have a leak, replace the seals and bearing. Make sure the shaft is not worn excessively.
