Hi,

I’m interested in checking the condition of my piston / rings. Will the top end come off the cylinder with the engine in situ or do I have to plan on removing the engine?

The space looks pretty cramped, but maybe removing the rad frees up enough room?

I get this quite a lot from half mechanics.

the rings outlast the pistons on a Husaberg and any modern bike for that matter. basically, the piston wares until it tilts. when it tilts enough it no longer has contact with the thrust-face walls and that is when you get smoking.

But my question is around removal of the top end assembly. Will the long bolts clear the frame? Will the head clear the frame? Or do I have to remove the entire engine just to remove the head-and if worn, the piston?

Most definitely. You have to remove the engine from the frame. That part is like 5% of the work, so there is no reason to try to skip it.

Your Husaberg has a sleeve type cylinder, hence the only way to remove/inspect the piston is to split the cases.

ha! ha! that is our own Mats Clementz of SWEDEN, he'd be mortified to be called a Finn! I suppose you could have called him something worse. he has a thread running with 812 replies right near this one. Just buy a flywheel puller and get on with it.
