2001 Fx470 rings

Hello, I bought a 2001 fe400 with a 2001fx470e engine in frame off and old man a month back and have blown it up twice already. First the bearing for the counter balance broke, not too big of a deal fix that and rode it for 15hrs and it seems as though the rings on the piston have let go. Was wondering if anyone know where I could get a set of rings and possibly suggestions of shops in the midwest of the U.S. that could replate my sleeve. Bike ran very strong before and after it broke the first time would like to keep it going Thanks!

Mr Tyler!!!!!

....that is why the 470 is known as the ratfuck engine........you just about gold leaf plated the term there all on your own!

not quite sure I've ever heard the term "I've blown it up twice in a week" before. maybe we're a little loose with the 'actualitae' there but I like your style...got a tale to tell; so tell it!

the problem is, nobody knows which piston is in them. a photo of the crown would help, I can tell by the codes printed in them.

as for 'just' rings, what happened to this bike? you shouldn't ever need 'just rings' because the piston always goes before the rings do. forget what your father teaches you..... fact is, that with todays modern short skirt pistons in short-stroke engines; the piston only has to show 0.02mm of wear, the piston rocks, the rings can't seal and the bike becomes a smoke machine.

if it needs re-lining it needs a piston. if it needs a piston, you have a chance to change the shape of the piston and (I suggest) LOWER the compression while getting the squish band right. you would have the same power but the engine will feel softer and last longer.

before stripping, its vital that you measure the gap between the piston and the head at TDC with the HG fitted. a bit of plasticine is all you need and inpregnate it with 1mm solder wire looped like an ampisand "&" and placed at 3 and 9 o clock - so over the "wrist" (real name gudgeon) pin ends - and smeared in a little oil. rock it over TDC, take out the solder, measure with a very-near caliper and then the next piston can be selected.

I plan on tearing it apart later on today to get piston size and shape. The counter balance adjacent to the crank had a bad bearing and locked up the whole motor. I got a new bearing for that and put it all together and I was doing a wheelie in 5th when it all of sudden started cutting out and blowing white smoke and won’t start now. I’m assuming the top end is cooked so I’ll have to see how much is actually trash. I do have to say though, this is very comical to me and I do plan on making it run again.

UPDATE: I’ve disassembled the engine and have found a melted piston. The sleeve it’s self to me still looks useable to me with cleaning. The first issue I had with this bike wasn’t necessarily it blowing up, the bearing on the counter balance for the crank failed and locked up the engine. Will be looking for a new piston with ring kit to make this puppy run again.
