Fe 400 valve clearance help

Hi, I have a FE 400 on a 04 plate, 03 model with E Start,
I have read up on the 1/6 turn valve adjustment, so I thought I'd have a go, I got tdc, I believe, I undid the nut and screwed the adjuster all the way in which was a couple of complete turns, which seems to much unless I have something wrong, they can't be that far out can they?, any guidance will be appreciated thanks.

barring a destroyed cam follower bearing, you got the wrong tdc.
do it again. when rotating the engine clockwise using the flywheel nut, watch the rockers and AFTER the intake goes up then down, find tdc and stop. measure at THIS tdc and it should be right

As Ned described, be sure you are adjusting the valves at TDC on the compression stroke and not at overlap TDC where both the intake and exhaust valves are held ever so slightly open.

I screw the adjusters all the way out then slowly turn them back in. As soon as I feel resistance that's when I back the adjusters out 1/6th turn. Practice turning the adjusters in and out and notice when the resistance changes. A light touch on the screwdriver is required. Try closing you eyes to enhance the feel of resistance.

When the you are done adjusting the valves you should be able to feel just a slight amount of play when you grab the rocker arms and try to move them. A quick check to see if the valves require adjustment is to merely make sure the rocker arms have the slightest amount of play in them.

The exhaust valves are critical as it will affect how well the Autodecompression Device works. In a perfect world the exhaust can be slightly tighter than the intakes. Check the valves every other time you change the oil. In no time you will be an expert.

Hi, thanks for the help, I have checked tdc again and set it after the inlet valves open and shut, and I have adjusted them as husabutt suggested, so fingers crossed, the gaskets on the valve covers look OK, should I replace them or will a bit of sealant be OK.

The gaskets will last a long time. I would use a very thin coat of heavy grease on the gasket where it meets the rocker cover to facilitate easy removal, as you should be checking the valve lash regularly.

Sealant is not necessary (and will probably ruin the gasket upon disassembly) as the valve covers rarely leak.

Holy Moly, D'oh!!...............I should have said that in a perfect world the exhaust could be a little tighter to help the Autodecompression Device.

Thanks for the proofread Ned !!!
