FE570 Hard Starting

I've put up a similar thread in the past but I have now just replaced the piston and rings, shimmed the valves, fitted a new plug and adjusted the TPS and I am still having a hard time starting the engine.

It cranks over fine....nice and fast but takes a long time before it starts to fire and run. Once it is running it runs fine.

Could the problem be a faulty injector and is there any way of testing and cleaning it??

Any thoughts??

Thanks

Testing probably yes, I don’t know. Spray pattern and volume are tested, but idk how exactly.

What fuel filters do you have? I’m with forum member Jon Andersson here: No filters after the fuel pump except a high-quality add-on inline filter (e.g. Golan super-mini filter). No filter in the injector housing. They plug up.

Injector can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner I believe. That is a quite thorough method. but rather involved if you don’t have a cleaner. Another useful way is to open the injector by connecting a 9v battery to it to open it and then blow compressed air into it (“in reverse”). This method is also courtesy of Jon.

Anyone nearby that can lend you an injector? I would if you were close :)

btw - Is it easier to start when it’s hot?

Or is restarting always slow?

(They should fire up very quick btw.)

Tourist, I have a 570 that is very hard to start when cold, but starts immediately when hot. What are your thoughts on it? Thanks!

I wish I knew :) The stuff that Lancer has checked is stuff that makes sense to check. TPS is subtly important!

There’s also a choke button and idle speed adjuster btw! And these bikes are supposed to have a rather high idle - 1800-1900rpm as per the 2012 manual updates. which feels high before you get used to it.

When I had a weak battery I had to give mine a liiiittle throttle to cold start. Slight throttle and then release it. People here theorized it might be a slight combo of fuel delivery and the open throttle allowing for slightly more compression.

Jroble, it sounds like a TPS adjustment. If it’s not, you should start by checking it’s setting. If not done to eliminate this, it can cause confusion determining other issues. It’s not a difficult process.

Lancer, it sounds like TPS. Should be 0.64V.

Buy an ultrasonic cleaner off eBay. Do a full clean. I get fuel injection cleaner from Supercheap and use that. Once it’s been through it’s process I open the injector with 12v. I made a connector to attach the injector then blow out with compressed air.

I run a fuel sock in the tank neck and a ZipTy Golan at the quick disconnect. Remove and DONT replace the thimble filter at the fuel rail ONLY if you have the ZipTy filter fitted. It’s fuel injected. Fuel injection is temperamental. You need to upgrade this by those suggestions mentioned. It will help prevent any issues that you don’t want to experience out on the trail.

Is your idle at 1,800 rpm? Set this before you do your TPS.

Thanks Alan! for bringing clarity!; I had mostly guesses & hunches

Would you recommend any particular type or brand or price range of ultrasonic cleaner?

(like impact drivers, torque wrenches, OBDII readers, tubes of threadlocker, Husabergs, and Nintendo consoles, every home should have one)

Thanks Alan! I'll check it.

Hey Guys, thanks for the input and suggestions. The only thing I haven't done is replace the fuel filters which I am about to order now. I hadn't replaced them up until now because it runs fine once it's running. The only time it will start straight away is when it's stopped and started within a couple of secs......wait a minute and it'll take 15 - 20 secs to start again

TPS is set to 0.638v which is as close as I could get it to 0.64 and it made absolutely no difference to the original 0.38v it was set to before I adjusted it.

Anyhow I'm going to replace the filters and clean the injector and will let you know how it goes once it's done.

Thanks

Lance

Mate, I run one of these. I find it brilliant. I can soak for hours at 70*c then run it for the ultrasonic clean.

This is my unit. They have gone up in price. I only paid $60 but these are so well made.

Oh, and mate, you are spot on....every Fuel injected bike owner should own one. But I tell you what, it has been brilliant cleaning carby parts. I have a 2T that sits here for quite some time that refuses to start unless I clean the carb parts in the cleaner.
