Bike general maintenance

Hi guys joined this forum a few weeks back and been looking through posts. Iv just aquired an 02 650 and have got straight to maintenance on it. Iv adjusted valve clearances but read multiple things about them. I did it by turning till just tight then backed off 1/6th (1 nut corner to the next corner). Is this the best method and is it definitely the same on both inlet and exhaust. Also drained the oil and cleaned out mesh strainer which did have some metal filings but i guess thats pretty usual? Changed oil filter but not refilled with oil yet. Whats the best oil and grade to use in these, i live the Uk btw. Also is it 1 litre exactly they hold?

Cheers for any help/guidance

Jason.

I've recently got the same bike, and believe a litre is correct to fill. However I'm concerned about what I think may be an oil consumption issue.
I've been recommended the 15w40 motorex oil, just as long as the oil is warmed before you give the engine a workout.

That's the way I have done my valve clearances, however I still have alot of backfiring. I am going to recheck them again post today's ride, but I think my issues are mainly carb related.
Pretty sure the 1/6th turn rules is perfectly good to use. On a cold engine only.

Thanks, will try get some decent oil for it, does yours have the crank vent mod as read some lose oil up through the back vent on rocker cover as cam chain chucks it up and into the airbox/frame.

Come to think of it, yes mine did have a small pool of oil in the frame when I had the air filter out last. I didn't think much of it but I will check again now it's done some miles and see how bad it is.
Thanks
