engine died?

my fc 550 has decided to stop running after a short ride out it appeared to just pitter out.Ive checked fuel, spark plug and cleaned the carb the only thing that seems to be lacking was the spark plug with a very dull spark.Ive had local bike shop take a look at it and they seem to think its the valves,Any ideas on this as i dont want the shop to have my pants down so to speak. Thanks for any constuctive advice

What year is the bike skinny?

Did the bike shop give you a good explanation as to why they think it might be the valves? Did you experience any 'orrible mechanical noise before it died?

To be honest, I have ridden one of my bikes with totally f00ked cam, camshaft bearings, rocker roller bearings etc. at full tilt round a racing circuit, then stopped and re-started the thing and ridden it further and it still kept on going. Yes I know, I was young & very stupid and the time - until I got the bill!

Valves only really become an issue when you're trying to start the bike and they're tight - it'll still run though.

I suspect you may be suffering from a knackered stator if it just kind of died on you.

Hope this helps,
Simon

The bikes 2003, and it made no horrible noises just stopped.I suggested to the bike shop it was spark and he replied "that it could be valve not seating right" hence it not starting?I should imagine hes giving me worse case scenario (so when the bill comes, i wont pass out )Thanks for you reply Simon

I think it is most likely going to be the stator that has given up the ghost then - your dealer should really swap that out and tests first before opening up the engine.

While it is possible to test the stator with measuring equipment, sometimes the result show it too be good, but it isn't.

Good luck,
Simon

if you have a valve seating problem ,i would suspect you would be down on compression.was a compression test taken?i suspect your stator to be on its very last legs.if you plan to keep the bike much longer i would just buy one andput it on and see what happens.if it does not make any difference save it as you will soon enough be needing it.dan.
