Overheat ?? motor siezed??? UPDATE

Second day rode from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm after leaving
a pig-roast which was great headed back on the trails about three-
tenths of a mile it started ticking real bad decided to turn around
and get off the single track goat paths and it happened the engine
locked up well I pushed it over the side of the mountain down into
a creek pushed it down the creek to a main trail where I pushed it
to the trailhead to wait for a ride back to the cabin got back to the
cabin 11:30 at night went to bed next morning tore into it and
discovered that the water pump impeller was disintegrated there
were two pieces in the cover? This bike has less then 35 miles on
it second tank of gas and now it’s seized help any thoughts
not once did I notice any steam from the overflow

It sounds like 2 separate problems. I am relatively sure the bike did not sieze fom overheating in that amount of time. These motors tend to handle heat fairly well. Did the engine happen to backfire through the carb at all? The earlier motors had issues with the starter sprags grenading.
If this was a left over from the KTM distributor in Ohio, there is no telling what may be going on.

I did not hear any backfire hopefully thursday  I will have time to
tear into it :robot: wish me luck as I have never done this to a husa before is the impeller from a ktm the same :?:
what is a "sprag"

berger May 31st, 2005 11:00 AM

The sprag is the one way clutch for the starter. I am not sure about the waterpump impeller.

There is a cover to view starter gears on Right front of engine. Remove it and have a look see. E start is suspect on old 600's. Take the ignition cover off and with a wrench try to gently turn engine backwards. May be gear teeth in the wrong places which will fall free when reversed. Impeller was also a common problem back them. I lost 2 but never had the engine sieze.

35miles on it, are you implying that it is new? If so, I would take it back to the dealer.

I got the bike from Deckers ktm it was a leftover setting at ktm usa
which he bought in a lump sum deal there is no warranty on the bike

I have a 98 600FE. My impellor was totally corroded and degraded when I opened it a few weeks back. It must have been very ineffective. It is very hot here without even turning the engine on so that engine has got to be able to stand some heat. It is still going so fingers crossed here.... Good luck with yours..

Eman,
My first Berg was a '96 FE600. I had the engine out of the bike 4 times, and it was always the starter clutch that caused the problem. A mate of mine had the same bike and the same problem. The only difference was that his sprag discintergrated and seized the motor.
I ended up selling the bike for a 2000 FE501E (no trouble there), but before I did this, I managed to get the 96 600 trouble free by only using the starter motor when I really needed it - the rest of the time I just used the kick starter. Definitely do not use the EStart when the bike is cold - it only wears the sprag clutch out faster in this model.

Cheers Mark
