06 Fe550 won't idle, backfiring

I have a 2006 Fe550 that has been stored since last year. When put up last year it was running great and I even took it out on the road a few times over the winter with no problems. Getting ready for riding season I have cleaned carb, replaced plug, changed air filter and checked for intake leaks. The bike is running very rough at idle with choke on. It will not idle with choke off and tends to only do good at high rpms, but as soon as you release throttle it backfires much more than normal and dies if you do not keep revving engine. The power in the low rpms is terrible almost non existent, but begins to pull hard past a certain point. It seems like it is fouling the plug, but examining plug I see clean dry plug, it is a little reddish in color. I have also examined the valve springs thinking one may have broken but they all seem to be in good shape.

I would appreciate any input you may have on my problem.

Thanks

Sounds like you have to lean mixture. Try giving it more fuel/air

Pull the mixture screw out of the bottom of the carb. Inspect it for a missing or damaged washer and o-ring seal. Either of these are very easy to drop or misplace. If the o-ring is missing or damaged the bike will run unbelievably lean.

If that checks OK. Do another thorough cleaning of all the jets and air bleeds.

Pulled the mixture screw out and I don't see an o ring. Just the long screw and spring. Where would the o ring be?

The o ring should be on the screw as well

first o ring and then spring

Okay, so I will start with getting an o ring for this, any certain type or size?

oring probably stayed at its place inside the carb. Take very small screwdriver and try to take it out.

You have the screw, spring, washer then o-ring. The o-ring and washer are very tiny. You can check up in the carb body, it might be stuck there. If you removed the screw with the carb mounted it may have fallen off towards the starter. Have a look around. Again, it is very small. Finding a new one? Good luck. You may need to buy a new screw, they make some very nice aftermarket ones. Just make sure it comes with the o-ring included.

You can get these o rings no problem, I got myself few when I lost it first time on my good old Yamaha WR450 Since then I always remembered to look after the o-ring when cleaning the carb. You can either order it from the berg dealer or yamaha or get nice alloy fuel screw and it will come with one (but good to have few spare o rings!).

Well, I ordered Taffys carb kit and it is night and day, bike is idling not backfiring, still tuning it in but it looks to have solved the problem.

On another note, in my test runs I am seeing a good amount of oil leak from the side of the headcover where compression release mounts to it. Does anyone know what this is caused by?

Thanks for the help
