changing starter needle roller bearings

my 05 450fe started a strange rumbling sound around clutch. pulled motor down couldn't find anything at the start but found the four small needle roller bearings holding starter gears look fine but when put gear in a turn by hand it sounds like rollers in bearing are square. can anyone give advise on removal not any room for pullers. thinking of machining a shaft so is a tight slide fit filling half full of grease and heat case with heat gun place in shaft and hit with hammer. making sure case is nice and safe from damage

Use a blind hole puller to get the bearing out. Make sure the bearing is available first.

sometimes its easier to remove the rollers first with a drift so the puller can catch on the lip

heating the case to 150 degC also helps

FWIW Dynabolts make good one off blind pullers

This little needle bearings were the one thing that I had the most trouble with during my rebuild.
I would take the cover to a good machine shop and pay for it.

as said, heating the cases with the bearings ready to fall down CAN work. I also drill the aluminium bushes that surround the bearings to weaken the hold.

finally i bash their walls into the middle. it's a mess - its shambolic....
