I Ride: Husaberg FE 450 Force Edition
FE 450, 2005, Force Edition

Cheers all!

Long time lurker, M. from Zagreb, Croatia, sometimes contacted Taffy for some parts and tech advice. I sometimes fix bikes as a hobby for my friends and riding buddies, but no mechanical education and still limited tools despite spending fortunes on crazy shopping sprees at local hardware stores.

Three weeks ago I picked up a Hus FE 450 Force, 2005, with 230 hours on the clock, from the outside it seemed mint. It did cca 15 hours and stopped with no spark, I fixed a broken wire on the stator and started to do a medium reconditioning, nothing much: rollers on the cam followers, timing chain, valve seals, head gasket and such.

When I took the valve cover off there was a surprise waiting, never seen something like it. Mint from outside, a graveyard from inside..... I'm surprised it even started.....

As I'm expecting to become a father soon, I'll be doing a slow, really slow rebuild due to lack of financial resources. Or maybe the baby is going to get cheap diapers and I'll fix the bike quickly....I'll decide on the move....

Some pics, enjoy....

Re: FE 450, 2005, Force Edition

Glad you like my post, I'll post pics as I progress.

As for now I'm pretty sure I'll be needing a new piston, a new barrel and a camshaft + seals and bearings, nothing much, only cca 500.... Hopefully I won't be needing a new con rod....

As I never did such work on a Hus I'd be interested in hearing some info on special requirements, stuff to look out for and such, please, feel welcome to warn me of all unusual bits regarding this kind of engine...

More pics from today's session at the basement. Thankfully no more surprises. For now.

I'll have to stop working on the bike cause I need to find a suitable magneto puller. Hopefully I'll be back at it thursday or friday.

Cheers!

Hi

I know all about that surprise feel when you open it

Why do you think a new barrel ? you can live with that !

Just work on the head, that really needs your attention

Good luck

Hy Zaga,

Can you be more specific about work on the head, my plan is a new cam, bearings, timing chain and valve seals. Do you think anything else is needed around the head?

Barrel? Don't know....maybe new rings and a slight hone? What do you think?

Cheers!

It's not clear in the photo but it looks as if there are scores on the barrel.
The barrel is plated/coated and as such you cannot hone it. You will either need a new barrel or to get it replated. Either way you will also need a new piston.
From time to time a barrel and piston will come up on ebay some say they were removed from the bike when new when a smaller piston barrel set were fitted. They usually come up just after I have bought a new one

Good luck

Hi

As Taffy say, I think you can live with that barrel and maybe just some rings as you say, and don't go to spent a lot of money to make it perfect.

When I mean the head it's what your are saying, maybe check the valve seats if everything is ok, what I don't understand is that rust that you have in one of the valves ?? did you had water on it ?? can you understand ?
