Old Berg whines like a 2002 after rebuild

Hello again,
1997 fe600e

So i have just completely rebuilt the engine, the rebuilt included, all bearings and rollers, gaskets, and seals, connecting rod kit, high comp piston w/new rings, taffy decomp and spring, taffy sledge, cam follers, '55' camshaft, high velocity intake porting per mototuneusa.

did not replace timing chain or srague (sprague only a few years old)

at first the engine would not start and was not getting fuel, i accidently left the fuel on all day when i went to work, came home noticed i laft on the fuel and cranked it and it fired right up with the e-button like normal. was nice and quit for 2-3 seconds then started whining/squealing so i shut it down after 2-3 seconds of this, noticed oil was very full of air, let it sit for a half hour and tried it again, this time it ran for 15 seconds then started the squeal/whine again so i shut it down and oil was full of air again. let it sit for a half hour and started and went 30 seconds before the squeal/whine started, the final time it went for 1 and a half minutes and the squeal/whine never started and felt like it was running well....however....it does still have some whine there it sounds just like a 2001-2002 model year bike that has the noisy timing chain or gear noise type of 'supercharger' whine any time the engine is running and any rpm. when it was doing the louder whine/squeal noise it was definatly louder than it should be and sounded like the piston was going to seize. after the final start when it all seemed good i drained the oil and it seemed ok, maybe had a tiny amount of aluminum flake, a few little silicone pieces, and some small black bits that looked like black piston skirt coating bits but was definatly not terrible and no metal pieces overall seemed clean......

what do i do now? drive it? tear it down for inspection? maybe it was all due to oil not being primed well and caused by air? i was very meticlus when putting together but i guess anything can happen. i did not have any whine before.

Alright i voted the scooter option, but i really hate scooters and dont have any enemy's so i think im going to rent a canoe and hop on the the mississippi take that biatch all the way to the golf of mexico, hop on a dolphin and hitch a ride to the nearest port where surely ill find true love.....

maybe ill just refill it with oil and start it again and if it seems 'just whinny' run it softly up the street and see what happens.....

ok the fat lady hates me....(if you cant tell my bergs nickname is the fat lady) anyway...

first wouldnt start due to fuel issue, 24 horus later it starts like nothing happened but squeals/whines (3 minutes total run time spread out over a few horus)

24 more hours later, starts and runs like there is no reason to not drive it, like originally but a little beefier and less connecting rod noise

tonight filled with oil and started it maybe a little whinny but not bad let it run for a minute and its ok, shut it down and drill out 3 broken downpipe studs on a old suburban to put in new donuts gaskets for my in-laws, start it again sounds like my old berg for a minute, shut it down restart it five-ten minues later and run for another minute revving periodically all sounds like nothing ever happened ticks over nice and quiet.

drained and filled oil again, was cleaner than last time not perfect but acceptable, started and ran for another minute nice and quiet and normal

what happened?? not enough assembly lube/oil?

What kind of oil are you using for break-in and assembly?
Did you dribble some over the valvesprings and cam?
And some on the rocker bearings and their shafts?
Clutch plates soaked before hand? Did the squeal sound clutchy?
Have you pulled the valve cover to have a look at the top?
Or at least take the inspection caps off right after you run it to make sure it's oiling well. Maybe run it with the caps off and isolate the squeal?
Lay it on each side for a bit to oil up the innards thoroughly?
I think maybe you should test ride it without a helmet so you can listen, up and down the street a few times.

Hope it was just some paranormal activity, pretty common on Hallows Eve.

Re: Old Berg whines like a 2002 after rebuild

Idle,
thanks for the response, i am using nonsynthetic 15w40 rotella-t as this is what i planned to use for the life of the engine and used previously except possibly the synthetic verision later on, i did soak the clutches for two days when i was building, i soaked everything with oil, vavle springs, cam (normally i would have used some assembly lube but ran out apparently) soaked bearings, rocker shafts, etc. i did lay it on its side after the first start before starting it again and it did help, i didnt take the top off yet as it started to and still seems ok.

dont wear a helmet?? what if it locks and i go down?? LOL

today after work i started it and let it tick over while i put on the seat and all seemed normal at tickover, took it up the street at a slower-moderate pace and made sure it shifted throught the gears, it between them ok and back down through them all seemed ok, took my helmet off at the intersection and walked around it and it sounded fine,

thats when i decided enough was enough and gave a wicked beat run for five miles or so, all was well seems nice and tight and as quiet as normal, think it needs a little carb tuning for the new parts but it felt really nice i drained the oil was cleaner yet than the last change, going to drive it to work tomorrow i think, dont know what helped the most but something definatly added some power even with the lack of tune.........

this winter ill be tearing the whole bike down for resto, ill probably pull the rocker box and maybe the head again just to see whats up in there, i wont probably be driving it much before then, getting cold here and could be in the snow season anytime....

Re: Old Berg whines like a 2002 after rebuild

another thing i forgot to mention was, previously before the build, occasionally after a crash the engine would stall but the bike would be cranking itself while on its side, i would kill the key switch and turn on the key switch and it would crank automatically, usually a bang on the seat or so would make it stop or just flipping the switch back and forth,

after the build the first 'key on' started to crank the engine without pushing the button, had a harder time getting it to stop than normal and never did find out why, possibly a relay or solenoid issue or wiring problem but didnt see any wires screwed up,

i guess where i am going is maybe it was my starter that would start to try cranking with the engine running? guess i dont know what kind of sound that would make on one of these bikes and am too scared to intentionally try it lol, i could imagine it could cause a noise simliar to what i had but everytime i turn the key on after it quite happening it never went into auto crank mode and never started cranking with engine running before so who knows, just glad it seems to be running good now.

Re: Old Berg whines like a 2002 after rebuild

All i can say is that "it happens"
My first berg (2002 FC550) bought right off the showroom floor. 2 hour break in ride, change the oil and it's loaded with metal. Next ride, change the oil, and filter. filter and screens loaded with aluminum and metal. A couple of more oil changes and the same thing. enough metal that you would swear some thing was going to wear through the cases. took it back to the dealer, they tore it down while I watched. Never found the issue. no evidence of wear in the cases etc.. Reassembled it. The metal contamination went away after a few more rides and oil changes. Bike ran great till it shagged some rocker rollers at about 250 hours.
Strange Husaberg stuff.

strange husaberg stuff for sure...haha...ride home from work (another 20 miles) i ran her pretty hard.... average speed 70-80mph, saw 90+ few times, treated every stop sign like it was a solo WOT drag race (theres only a few and i live out in the boonies) seems very healhy and fast, drained the oil and was clean as normal zero aluminum flakes or silicone bits, starts like a dream, no weird noises, even close as far as tune i think, i still might pull the inspection covers when the engine comes back out this winter and go from there, i probably wont get a lot of driving in bfore then, it was 26f this morning
