Oil change question ('08)

The manual says to lay the bike on its side when changing the filter. I've never had to do this with any bike so I'm wondering...
how you keep the gas from running out the breather- plug it with something? Is there anything else I need to be concerned with when laying it over, as far as spills and such?

(I'm sure this has been covered already, but I couldn't find any threads.)

Before dumping the oil, run the engine with the fuel tap off. That should use up most of the fuel.
I always forget to do this so end up with a small amount of fuel leaking out of the carb.
It soon evaporates away though.

If you put it in gear and lean the handlebars against the wall on full lock it'll be fine. I never even bother with that, just leave it on the work stand. Not much oil left in there, and with a rag to collect, it not a problem.

Re: Oil change question ('08)

I put a pull-down strap around a door handle originally and adjusted it so the bike leaned away to the right nicely.

if you want to be really fussy: the front wheel should be up a bit and the bike leaning to the right.

Re: Oil change question ('08)

I park in a motorcycle garage (I live in NYC) which is delineated by 2 yellow lines- no walls or doors to lean against.
So, it sounds like laying it on its side isn't something that everyone does- I guess I just need to make sure I get some oil into the filter hole.
Thanks for the replies.
