Help! 2001 Husaberg Fe501 died on trail

I was having a great second day ride up in the Reno Mountains when my Husaberg started fine with the electric start, drove approx. 30-40 yards and stopped running. No funny noises, nothing out of the ordinary. Plenty of fuel in the tank. Lots of experienced guys trying to kick it which by the way never has worked for me. I typically start it by kicking it 10-20 times to get things moving and then use the electric start. I purchased this bike from a Husaberg dealer in Vacaville, CA. and have only ridden it 3 times. The owner stated the valves and the entire bike for that matter has been looked at and tuned up. The only thing that may have played a role was that it was raining and I am wondering if some water may have found its way into the carb...?

Thanks in advance.

Back to basics, fuel, spark and compression, all at the right time and it'll go. Which bit is missing.

The SEM stators can be problematic, but usually only start to play up when they get hot. Dellortos can flood. If its all setup properly, they'll start easy with the kick, my 501 will start with my hand cranking the kick starter when warm.

Is it getting spark? This should be one of the first things to check (because it has a SEM ignition). It should have a nice fat blue spark. If its barely noticeable or nonexistant then your stator more than likely needs to be replaced or rewound.

Here are the values to test your stator.

Thanks guys for the help. Really appreciate it! After doing a bit more research on this very informative site, it sounds like the stator is the culprit.

After pulling the plug, It is not getting any kind of spark to speak of . Do I have any options on a stator that will be more durable or ???? Hopefully this will be a easy fix that I can perform myself...? I do have a bit of mechanical appitude, but not a lot of motorcycle experience. Lastly, can I buy a used (improved) version?

Spend some time here:
http://www.husaberg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Do a search on the site for SEM upgrades, lots of info.

Repaired and upgraded stators are available from Sparks who also supplies Taffy, AKA Taffmeister, and I think Boss AKA Rick Bozarth. Contact them for for more info. The Sparks stators are the go, improved starting and reliability, guaranteed.

I think Dan at Motoxotica has a sparks sem on hand. It should be a 2 kicker after SEM upgrade

Thanks Number9

That is who I bought the bike from. I called Dan and he said he would help out to a reasonable degree...

In other words, I feel like I am going to spend the maximum to get this thing fixed. I remember the day he tried to start the Husaberg and how many kicks it t0ok. My ignorance showed through when I went ahead and bought it. My bad as it took him many attempts.

If I knew that the stator was a piece of "s,,,,t" prior to the purchase, I would not have bought it... but alas no real help from Dan after my phone call... I guess that is what I asked for... Once again, I rode the bike three times...

For what it is worth, the bike rode and handled fantastic when it worked. But, I could never kick start it from the beginning (stator???), and nobody else could eithier. And that list would include about 10-15 experienced riders from the Dust Devil Club out of Reno. Needless to say, I was stranded about 40-45 miles out of Reno in the mountains with a screwed up bike. I called Dan today and he gave me a couple of diagnosis but I honestly feel zero backing in regard to by purchase. Knowing what I know now in terms or how many kicks it took to start initially, I would have never bought the bike. I feel that the stator was a issue from the get go...

I really don't think there is any way that Dan could be held responsible for knowing exactly when your stator will fail. The lifespan of a stator can be as little as two years or less. All stock Husaberg SEM stators are on their way out from the minute they were installed at the factory. One minute the stator is working fine and the next minute its shot. They are that poor. But on a positve note as Steve stated the rewind is the better than new solution.
