Leak from oil filter cover

After doing an oil change on my 2010 FE450 I noticed after the first long ride that a small amount of oil had leaked out from around the oil filter cover. I'd done a short test ride after finishing the oil change and cleaning up the engine and there wasn't any oil there after that ride as I checked for leaks, it only appeared after a much longer ride. I can't see any change in the oil level.

I oiled the new o-ring liberally before fitting the cover as recommended in the manual, and I'm wondering if what's come out is oil trapped under the cover outside the o-ring, which has sneaked out once it got really warm. If it is that rather than a real leak, I guess it's probably already stopped by now and is nothing to worry about. Just wondering if anybody else has had a similar problem? Do people mostly lube the o-ring with oil as per the manual, or a smear of grease instead?

Worst case I'll clean it up and ride again keeping an eye on the oil level, and see if any more oil appears around the filter cover. I always carry a small amount of oil with me anyway so I could top up while I'm out if necessary. I also have a spare oil change kit here so I can replace the o-ring if it turns out to be bad.

Re: Leak from oil filter cover

Hi Petem,
When I change the oil and oil filter I always put in the new O-ring that comes with the filter.
I have not seen any oil leaking from my cover.

I just use a smear of oil on the O-ring.
I tighten the 2 x 5mm bolts in 3 goes, making sure to pull the cover in as square as I can. Not sure if that is necessary it's just the way I do it.

Hey did you use a tension wrench on the two bolts as directed in the manual ????/

Yup, I always torque load anything which has a torque figure in the manual. I have 5 torque wrenches and lots of adapters so there's always one that suits the the job!

It was a new o-ring as I had the full oil change kit and I don't re-use things like o-rings and copper washers if I can avoid it (in fact I'd like to know why the kit doesn't include two new washers for the banjo bolt union). I put the cover on as straight as possible and pushed it home evenly by hand so it was virtually all the way in before putting the screws in, then tightened each one a little at a time in turn to make sure it didn't twist as that's always a good habit even where you're not sure it's necessary. I did an engineering apprenticeship and worked on aircraft for 15 years so that sort of thing's second nature (you'd get a ruler across the knuckles if you forgot!).

I think maybe I just put too much oil on the o-ring and it's the excess that was on the outside of the ring which has squeezed out past the flange, so the solution for next time might be to just use a smear as Davo mentioned. Thanks for the input guys - I'll clean up the leaked oil then ride it and see whether any more comes out.
