1st oil change

Just dropped the break in oil at 1 hr, cleaned the screens and put in a fresh filter and filled it up with Rotella T 15-40, this is a non synthetic and no moly oil, the guys at GDR use it in thier bikes too. I will repeat the process at 3 more hrs then my routine will be oil every 5 hrs and filters every 10 hrs. going for my 1st REAL ride on her today, will report later.

Don't know what the bike is, but if it's one of the LDCs isn't it supposed to have oil changes at 1h then 3h, i.e. the next one at another 2 hours more from where you are now rather than 3 more hours (which would be at 4h total)? Of course it's up to you when you do them anyway, and if it's not an LDC then the times might be different but just thought I'd mention it.

I know its 1hr and then 3 MORE hrs to the second one, think thats what I wrote but it could be taken both ways.

Re: 1st oil change

You're right, that is what you wrote but my point was that I think what you wrote isn't what it says in my service schedule!

I could be wrong, but as I understand it the first change is at 1 hour (total time), then the second is at 3 hours (total time) i.e. it should be showing 3 hours on the hour meter when you do the second one. If you go 3 more hours on top of the hour you've already done, you'll be at 4 hours on the meter.

In the schedule it says the second one is at "S3N", which is "once after three operating hours" - it doesn't say after three more operating hours (and it would be odd if it did), so I read it as 3 hours in total when you do the change (and so did the dealer I bought the bike from who said they needed to do the service after 3 hours total). If the second service really is meant to be done at 4 hours total then the "S3N" definition in the service schedule is simply written wrongly, which I'd hope isn't the case.

So IMHO, if you've done 1 hour now you should ride 2 more hours then do the next change, not 3 more.

Sorry to go on about it, but if you do it an hour later than it should be done I can't see that being good for the engine in the long run which is why I thought I'd say something. You're not obliged to take any notice of course, I could be wrong and it's your bike so it's entirely up to you. I'll shut up now and leave you in peace!

Re: 1st oil change

I have a new 2010 FE390. As per the manual I did an oil and filter change and screen clean at 1 hr, then again, 2 hours later at 3 hrs, as per the manual.

What is interesting is that the dealer said "dont worry about the 1 hr service, do it at 3", BUT, with the amount of crap on the lower oil screen, I am VERY glad I did it at 1 Hr.

The oil was clean at 1 hr, but filthy at 3 hrs. At 3 hrs, the upper oil screen totally clean (first time I checked), and lower one semi dirty.

I plan to do my next oil change after a 2 day ride this weekend that will take me to 15 hrs.

I am sourcing cheap Hi-Flo oil filters on ebay and buying in bulk, so I will ALWAYS change the oil filter when doing oil - only an extra 3 minute step, and cheap, so may as well. If I am paying $AU100 for 4 litres of Motul oil, whats an extra $AU5 on an oil filter I say.

Best Regards
