AMA Supermoto in USA

I finally got a chance to see a Supermoto thanks to OLN. I think Supermoto is an awesome form of motorcycle racing. It's coming to my home town Reno, Nevada next week and I can't wait to watch it live. Today I got to see the televised event at Copper Mountain, Colorado thanks to Outdoor Life Network who is televising the whole series (DTV 608, Charter 406). This was the first time I've actually watched a Supermoto event and I was surprised to see a few things. This is for Round 2.

The Unlimited Supermoto event had almost nothing but KTM 525 SMR's.

The 450CC AMA Supermoto event had mostly Honda CRF450's.

There were no bergs in the 450CC class and one FS650e in the unlimited class that placed 18th (well, at least it finished).

The 450CC class had a lot of big names in US motocross, flat track, and various other motor sport venues having a go at Supermoto for the first season. Based on lap times, they didn't seem to have any trouble adapting. None of the big names raced in the Unlimited class.

The Americans did not get their asses kicked accross the board by the EU vets they raced against. In fact Doug Henry (US) probably would have won the 450CC class with a 1/2 second lead if he had not had a mechanical in the last few laps.

Jurgen Kunzel (Germany), an EU vet, won the Unlimited class, but placed 3rd in the 450CC class losing out to Jeff Ward (US) and Alexandre Thiebault (France). Pretty amazing the guy won then placed in two classes within a half hour of eachother. Also pretty amazing that Jeff Ward, a former US motocross champion, could jump on a Supermoto bike and beat Jurgen Kunzel.

Please stop by our pit area this weekend, if you decide to attend the race. We would welcome a visit from any Berg enthusiast. And if your taste runs in that direction, I'll try to have some Umbrella Girls hanging around too

Bike number nine, white Ford box van, shaved head, two pitbulls - very easy to find us.

Best regards,

Brett Saunders
